Clinton, Saudi Arabia explore Syria crisis

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sought to work out a unified strategy on the crisis in Syria in talks with Saudi officials on Friday as further violence stymied U.N. efforts to convince Damascus to implement a cease-fire.

Clinton's talks with Saudi King Abdullah and other officials come ahead of a 60-nation gathering of the "Friends of the Syrian People" in Istanbul over the weekend aimed at finding ways to aid Syria's opposition. The U.S. is hoping to help unify the splintered opposition's ranks while pushing for humanitarian aid and further isolation of Assad's regime.

Saudi Arabia, along with fellow Gulf nation Qatar, has called for a more aggressive approach, including arming the rebels and carving out a safe haven inside Syria from which the opposition can operate.

International opponents of Assad are struggling to pin down a strategy on Syria as a peace plan put forward by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has so far failed to get off the ground. Syria has accepted the six-point plan, which includes a call for it to implement a cease-fire, but so far there has been no halt in fighting, and the opposition suspects Assad has no intention of stopping his crackdown and is only playing for time.

Assad said Thursday that he wants the plan to succeed, but insisted that the opposition must first commit to a cease-fire as well. Annan urged the Syrian government to halt its troops first.

"The government must stop first and then discuss a cessation of hostilities with the other side," Annan spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said Friday. "We are appealing to the stronger party to make a gesture of good faith. ... The deadline is now."

"Clearly, we have not seen a cessation of hostilities and this is of great concern," he said.

Syrian activists say fresh fighting erupted Friday between soldiers and rebel fighters in the country's northern Idlib province. More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's violence since last March, according to U.N. estimates.

Clinton arrived in Riyadh and began talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said. Saudi official news agency said Clinton then met with King Abdullah in his palace in Riyadh, along with top Saudi intelligence and security officials.

"Clinton will hold extensive talks with Saudi counterparts on the situation in Syria and on American efforts to stop bloodbath in Syria," a Saudi Foreign Ministry official in Riyadh said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he not authorized to discuss the talks.

The talks came a day after an Arab League summit in Baghdad, where divisions among Arab nations over Syria were clear. In a sign that they see little hope in diplomatic efforts from the League, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Gulf countries sent only low-level officials to the summit. In the end, the summit issued a joint resolution that held little new beyond expressing support for Annan's efforts.

President Barack Obama has publicly challenged Assad to leave power, but has refused to entertain U.S. military options to achieve that end. Washington has said it opposes military intervention in Syria, fearing that it would fuel an outright civil war that could break along dangerous sectarian lines. The opposition is born mainly from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority, while Assad's regime is backed by his own minority Alawite community, a Shiite offshoot sect.

For the U.S. and its allies, Syria is proving an especially murky conflict and one with no easy solutions. Assad's regime is of Washington's clearest foes, a government that has long been closely allied with Iran and anti-Israel groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-led Gulf countries are eager to see Assad's fall in hopes of breaking Syria out of its alliance with their regional rival, Shiite-majority Iran.

But the Syrian opposition is chronically fragmented. The Syrian National Council, a nominal opposition umbrella group based abroad, has limited authority on the ground. Syrian army defectors have set up a military leadership based in neighboring Turkey, but they too have only nominal command over the multiple armed rebel groups inside Syria. The U.S. has warned that al-Qaida and other Islamic militants are also taking advantage of the turmoil, attacking Assad's regime and trying to gain a foothold inside Syria.

And unlike Libya, whose leader Moammar Gadhafi inspired worldwide revulsion, Syria still has allies in Russia and Iran and a formidable army of its own.

On Thursday, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed to support Assad during talks with the prime minister of Turkey, a country which was once close to Damascus but now backs the opposition.

"Iran will defend Syria because of (its) support of the resistance front against the Zionist regime and is strongly opposed to any interference by foreign forces in Syria's internal affairs," Khamenei said. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is categorically opposed to any plan initiated by the U.S. regarding Syria."

Asked what might constitute success for Sunday's Friends of the Syrian People meeting in Istanbul, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, "We want to see as much unity as possible among those members of the opposition." She said conversations also would focus on humanitarian aid and further isolating Assad's government.

That is the same agenda as the first gathering of the Friends of the Syrian People, in February in Tunisia. There, the nations issued an ultimatum to Assad to end the hostilities, but it was roundly ignored.

Speaking Tuesday, Clinton cautiously welcomed the Syrian government's endorsement of Annan's plan. But Assad now has to make good on the deal, she said, citing the Syrian leader's "history of overpromising and under-delivering" when it comes to pledges of peace and reform.

Clinton said the U.S. and its allies would spend the next few days helping Syria's primarily Sunni opposition refine its vision of an inclusive democracy, to assure minorities still supportive of the government that they'd have a place in a post-Assad future. She said Washington hoped for progress on that front this weekend.

House candidate can note astronaut past on ballot

(AP) ? A congressional candidate in California's Central Valley can note on ballots that he used to be an astronaut.

A Sacramento County judge ruled Thursday that Democrat Jose Hernandez can use the ballot designation "astronaut." Hernandez is challenging freshman Rep. Jeff Denham, a Republican from Turlock, for California's 10th District seat.

A Sacramento law firm had argued in a lawsuit that Hernandez's use of the moniker would violate state elections law because Hernandez has left NASA. Hernandez had flown aboard the shuttle Discovery in 2009.

The Sacramento Bee reports (http://bit.ly/H3yHKG ) that Superior Court Judge Lloyd Connelly ruled that ballot designations apparently can reflect a profession or vocation held during the previous calendar year. Hernandez spent two weeks at NASA in 2011 before leaving the agency.

Maths and Olympics: How fast could Usain Bolt run?

LONDON | Fri Mar 30, 2012 1:03pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Usain Bolt, already the world's fastest man, could lop another 0.18 seconds off his 100 meter sprint world record even without running any faster. It's just a question of getting a few conditions right - and doing the maths.

Luckily for the top Jamaican sprinter, John Barrow, a professor of mathematical sciences at Britain's Cambridge University, has done the calculations for him.

He's also done some serious sums on the triathlon - an event he describes as "crazily constructed" and "ridiculously biased" - and on high jumping, archery, rowing and 100 or so other sports he feels could do with a little more number crunching.

His mission, he says, is to enrich understanding of sport and enliven appreciation of maths. All at the same time.

"It's about getting some perspective on how far there is to go," Barrow told Reuters ahead of a series of talks on the maths behind the Olympics in Cambridge and in London, host city for the 2012 Games.

NEW RECORD COULD BE 9.40 SECONDS

With Bolt, the distance is set - at 100 meters - but there's a lot that could be done with the timing, according to Barrow.

Having analyzed Bolt's reaction times to the starting gun - which are generally slower than other leading sprinters and often much slower than the 0.1 seconds allowed - the mathematician says that's where the first gain could be.

"The time that people record in the 100 meter sprint is the sum of two parts -- one is the reaction time to the starting gun and the other is the actual running time," Barrow said.

"So if Bolt could get his reaction time down to say 0.13 seconds, which is good but not exceptional, he'd make some improvement on his overall record time of 9.58. It may only be few hundredths of a second, but it's certainly room for improvement."

Barrow has also worked out the top wind speed Bolt would be allowed within Olympic rules to have helping him along - a maximum of 2 meters per second - and the optimum altitude at which he could race in thinner, and hence less resistant, air.

Adding them all together, Bolt could be looking at a new 100-metre world record of 9.4 seconds, without actually running any faster, Barrow said.

"The point I'm trying to make is that we're not going to be reaching the limits of human speed anytime soon," he said. "And there's no reason to assume Bolt is going to be just shaving fractions of hundredths of seconds off each time. There's scope for some quite big improvements."

Besides Bolt, Barrow has also turned his mathematical mind to scores of others sports and is publishing his musings in a new book due out this week called "100 Essential Things You Didn't Know You Didn't Know About Sport".

REDUCING ROWERS' WIGGLE

For rowing he has devised a funky equation to help coaches place crew members in fours or eights in the best possible combination to minimize the boat's "wiggle", which Barrow says results from the boat being subjected to alternating sideways forces.

The equation is M = sF-(s+r)F-(S+2r)F+(s +3r)F = 0, and Barrow concludes that in a coxless four, the rowers at front and back should be have their oars to the right, while the two in the middle should have theirs to the left.

For an eight, he suggests the rowers sit in a pattern from stern to bow with their oars stuck out to the right, left, left, right, left, right, right, left to reduce the wiggle, and says he hopes one of the Olympic crews will put his theory into practice at London 2012.

Barrow also turns his attentions to the newest sport in the Olympic Games - the triathlon - which consists of a swim, a bike ride and a distance run.

Barrow wonders whether the relative lengths of the swim, ride and run stages are really fair. And after analyzing the results of women's and men's triathlon medal winners at the Beijing Olympics, he thinks not.

"As the rules stand, the winning man spent a mere 16.7 percent of this total time swimming, 28.3 percent of it running, 0.8 percent of it in transition (going from one sport to the next) and a whopping 54.2 percent of it cycling," the mathematician writes in his book, concluding that this shows there is far too much emphasis put on cycling performance.

Asked what should be done about it, Barrow proposes what he calls an "equitempered triathlon".

"If it was sensibly constructed there would be an equal amount of time on each of three sports," he told Reuters. "That would be much fairer."

Stuck with high gas prices, drivers just pump less

Americans have pumped less gas every week for the past year.

During those 52 weeks, gasoline consumption dropped by 4.2 billion gallons, or 3 percent, according to MasterCard SpendingPulse. The decline is longer than a 51-week slide during the recession.

The main reason: higher gas prices. The national average for a gallon of gas is $3.89, the highest ever for this time of year, and experts say it could be $4.25 by late April. As a result, Americans are taking fewer trips to restaurants and shopping malls. When they take a vacation, they're staying closer to home.

But the decline in gas consumption is also a sign that efforts to push carmakers to produce vehicles with better gas mileage are paying off. The average new car now gets nearly 24 miles to the gallon, compared with about 20 mpg just four years ago, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

"I'd expect to see lower gasoline consumption for several years to come," Rice University energy expert Ken Medlock says.

Americans have cut back on fill-ups for extended periods before. In 2008, gas spiked from $3.04 to $4.11 per gallon in seven months. It wasn't until January 2009, when the national average for gas had dropped to $1.86 that consumption increased. Drivers bought more gasoline for 23 weeks in a row.

"The spike in 2008 was a real shock to the system," Medlock says. "There's still a residual impact on people's driving behavior."

There were other stretches of reduced gas use, notably two into the 1970's and one in the early 1980's. But in those cases, Americans eventually went back to driving big cars and trucks that guzzled gas.

This time may be different. Medlock thinks economic growth will be too modest and gas prices will stay too high for Americans to start driving more anytime soon. Economists expect the U.S. economy to grow 2.5 percent in 2012. The government estimates that gas will average a record $3.79 per gallon for the year.

John Gamel, who oversees MasterCard SpendingPulse's weekly consumption report, points to rising sales of fuel-efficient vehicles.

"People have gotten used to elevated prices and they've made their long-term purchases," Gamel says. "They're going to be using less fuel."

Consumers now care more if a car gets good gas mileage than if it's reliable, stylish or comes with a great deal, according to a survey of more than 24,000 new-vehicle owners taken last summer and fall by J.D. Power and Associates. That wasn't the case in the nine previous years that J.D. Power conducted the survey.

Automakers have listened to consumers, and responded to stricter government fuel economy requirements. They've improved engines and transmissions so cars burn less fuel. They've also made cars more aerodynamic, boosting mileage by cutting wind drag. The government is gradually increasing gas mileage requirements so that by 2025, cars and trucks will have to average 54.5 mpg.

Between February 2011 and February 2012, the combined city-highway mileage of a new vehicle sold in the U.S rose to 23.7 mpg from 22.7. Better gas mileage has a huge impact on the overall economy. At $3.86 per gallon, U.S. drivers would save $35.8 billion per year with a 1 mpg improvement for the entire fleet of cars, trucks and buses, according to Michael Sivak, a research professor with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Consumers would appreciate the help. The rise in gas prices has been so steep that they're still spending more on gas than a year ago despite using less.

Gasoline prices rose by 24 percent in the last 52 weeks, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. MasterCard, which collects purchase receipts from more than 100,000 service stations around the country, said spending on gas rose by 20 percent during the period.

In 2011, Americans spent 8.4 percent of their household income on gasoline, or about $4,155, compared with 6.7 percent in 2010, according to experts at OPIS.

W.M. Lewis, a general contractor in Anchorage, Alaska, says he is spending as much as $150 a week on gas. He's consolidating his errands, but still limiting his driving because fuel keeps getting more expensive.

"It's changing everybody's plans," he says. "You have less money to spend."

Behind all this is the high price of oil. Brent crude, which is used to price most of the oil used to make gasoline at many U.S. coastal refineries, has jumped by 16 percent this year to more than $124 per barrel. Benchmark U.S. crude has risen 9 percent this year to more than $107 per barrel.

Increased gas use by the growing number of drivers in China and other developing nations more than makes up for the drop in the U.S. That contributes to an increase in global demand for oil, which in turn pushes the price higher. Fear of a disruption to oil supplies from the Middle East also is keeping oil prices at lofty levels.

Young driver car insurance

wpid cars1 300x175 How to Check If a Car Has Insurance

Car insruance - which one is insured?

Wouldn?t it be nice if we could tell if a particular vehicle was insured just be looking at it?

At least you would know which cars not to drive next to on the freeway, and which cars not to park next to at the mall. Unfortunately, it?s not quite that easy.

While almost every state requires at least minimum mandatory limit liability coverage be purchased in order to operate a motor vehicle on a public road, there are tens of thousands of uninsured drivers on America?s roadways at any given time.

Put simply, they?re driving without car insurance and there?s no way we can tell.

That?s right, there is no way for the average person to determine if a car has auto insurance coverage in force, unless the license plate reads I-N-S-U-R-E-D (just kidding).

There are no publicly accessible databases or websites out there that keep a running list of who does and who doesn?t carry car insurance.

Often times, we find out the hard way that a person is driving uninsured. It may go down like this:

1. Someone causes an accident and damages your car.
2. You try to exchange insurance company information.
3. The shyster who hit you says they don?t have insurance, but wants to pay you in cash for any damages.
4. You agree, and then never hear from the person again after calling the fake number they gave you.

Many states are now switching over to electronic insurance reporting systems. This means that every insurer in the state keeps a live record of who does and does not have car insurance based on vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for all vehicles registered within the state.

So a police officer can check your tags while driving behind you and instantly determine if you have car insurance.

You better believe that you?ll be on the side of the road receiving a ticket in no time flat if you don?t have coverage (or don?t have proof of insurance).

But only the police have access to this sort of information. We, the general public, should not expect to gain access to this sort of information anytime soon, aka, never. Technically, it?s none of our business.

There are a few options made available by insurers to protect against the uninsured or underinsured drivers on our streets and highways.

Namely, underinsured motorist coverage, uninsured motorist coverage and personal injury protection, all of which can be purchased as part of your existing auto coverage.

These coverage types are designed to ensure you are not left to pay for bodily injury and property damage you suffer at the hands of some uninsured yo-yo.

Get insurance quotes online or contact a local independent insurance agent to review your coverage and shop your insurance premium.

Often, if you shop around you?ll be able to afford to add these valuable coverage types or increase your current liability limits and STILL save money.

New iPad explodes ... when attacked by lasers

8 hrs.

Every time a new gadget is released, especially an Apple gadget, videos showing the destruction of that new toy appear on the Internet. You might've seen plenty?of those clips already?? from Blendtec's Will It Blend? campaign?to SquareTrade's iPad pavement drops ? but you should still watch one more. Why? Because it involves an iPad ... and lasers ... and explosions.

The clip was created?by?video producer Lowell Niles, who uses Wicked Lasers?products?in his regular video work. He tells me that he's always seeking?ways to incorporate various light effects in his work and that he finds lasers produce some fantastic backdrops. Naturally this means that he has a small pile of powerful Wicked Lasers products ??such as the Spyder III Krypton, Arctic, and Torch?? sitting around.

After hearing his friends talk about the new iPad and reading that lithium-ion polymer batteries?? such as those found in the iPad?? may explode if heated, Niles decided to see what happens when a new iPad is exposed to laser beams.

It also didn't hurt, he tells me, that Wicked Lasers offered?a $1000 laser to the first person to destroy an iPad using only the company's laser products. The deal was great in Niles' opinion, since the iPad he destroyed only cost him $500.

And besides, he was more than happy to make this video since he, like many of us, likes "to see [things] blown up with lasers."

On the Scene: Proposed cuts in planetary science take center stage

THE WOODLANDS, Texas ? ?I think I?m not supposed to say ?got whacked.? Am I allowed to say ?got whacked??? asked John Grunsfeld, NASA associate administrator for science, while considering how to describe the cuts dealt to planetary sciences in President Obama?s proposed 2013 NASA budget.

It?s no secret that planetary sciences got hit badly, cut by more than $300 million (more than 20%) from the year before. Funds are running kind of like water on present-day Mars ? one of the hardest-hit exploration programs ? seeping, not flowing, and leaving planetary scientists parched and scratching around for answers.

On March 19, Grunsfeld and Jim Green, NASA?s Planetary Science Division Director, addressed a room packed with hundreds of scientists who?d gathered for the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. ?Heading to #LPSC2012 for what is sure to be an incredible conjunction of amazing planetary science and amazing planetary science outrage,? tweeted scientist Jim Bell, president of The Planetary Society, before the event.

Had I been Grunsfeld or Green, I might have considered donning a catcher?s mask, just in case someone in the audience used their advanced knowledge of orbital mechanics to questionable advantage. But people were civil (and Grunsfeld and Green are quite popular among the community), even when suggesting the administration had decapitated planetary science.

Among the casualties of the downsized budget are jobs ? employment for scientists whose missions are delayed or cut, staff at places like the Jet Propulsion Laboratory that manages many of the NASA missions,? and opportunities for scientists in the early stages of joining the community. ?Nobody understands fiscal austerity more than recent graduates like myself and other graduate students in the audience,? said Britney Schmidt, a post-doc at the University of Texas at Austin.

She also noted incongruities between the fallout from the budget implosion and the recommendations of the Planetary Science Decadal Survey, which establishes priorities within the community for the next decade.

We?ve aborted a joint mission to Mars with the European Space Agency, and prospects are dismal for any flagship mission that might fly to the outer planets in the near future. Europa, Enceladus, Uranus ? you?ll just have to wait to pay those guys a visit. Anyone who knows me knows I don?t like waiting. I want to know what?s beneath or within Europa?s ice shell ? now. And what the deal is with that cranky little spitter Enceladus. What secrets to planet formation are hidden in Uranus? The recipe for baking planets is probably stashed inside that most unfortunately named ice giant.

And, I want to know if Mars was as good an incubator for extraterrestrial life as everyone thinks it might have been.

But instead of planetary sciences, NASA has prioritized such projects as the James Webb Space Telescope and human exploration programs. JWST will peer into the deepest reaches of space and time, and neither I nor the people attending the town hall want to hear griping about it. Meanwhile, manned spaceflight more than doubled its budget. Perhaps as a ceremonial Band-Aid, Grunsfeld offered the explanation that human exploration and planetary science might not be so different after all. Sending people to Mars or an asteroid, for example ? President Obama?s goals for the next few decades ? involves both fields.

?I really think that the planetary program in the Science Mission Directorate is part of that grand exploration and that when we link humans and science, that both win,? Grunsfeld said.

He might have scored a victory when demonstrating how the two areas aren?t such strange bedfellows. ?If you could go to Mars today, if you could be a geologist on the surface of Mars, or an astrobiologist on the surface of Mars, would you want to go? I?m going to raise my hand,? he said. Most of the hands in the room shot up, too. ?We don?t send [a rover] to Mars so [a rover] can discover things, because it doesn?t discover things. You do,? he replied. ?It?s the human experience.?

At its essence, planetary science is a story of adventure, a tale of scientists casting their eyes skyward and flinging machines far from Earth with the singular purpose of scrutinizing our neighbors, the solid spheres and cratered rocks that spangle our evening skies. The study of these bodies is the study of life on Earth ? where did we come from, and are we alone? How do these roasted, bruised, icy, shrouded worlds compare to ours? And in place of a round trip and tons of frequent flier miles, what can we learn from a thousand-kilometer stare or epic, backwards wheelie across the Martian Meridiani Planum?

Maybe that?s why the cuts sting so much.

?At your recommendation, I applied to be an astronaut several times. I am ready to go,? Bill Nye said to Grunsfeld. Nye, aka the Science Guy, is now the chair of the board at the Planetary Society ? the world?s largest non-governmental space organization, as he describes it. Founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman, the Planetary Society has been slinging angry words at NASA since the 2013 budget proposal came out.

?I can tell you we?re outraged and dismayed by these proposed cuts,? Bell said. ?If implemented, they will represent a step backwards in NASA?s plan to explore our solar system and other planetary systems for evidence of present or past habitable worlds, which is a key focus of public interest in our solar system.?

It really is like being in a candy store (or in my case, a wine bar) and not knowing which tempting wares to spend some time with. In this case, it seems that no matter which are chosen, both sides ? and anyone who cares about these things ? lose.

Alleged Cashman stalker being mocked in jail

The woman accused of trying to shake down Yankees GM Brian Cashman for $21,000 says that, darn the luck, she?s been locked up with a bunch of Yankees fans. And they are not amused by her shenanigans. Louise Meanwell is in Riker?s Island on $300,000 bond. New York Post:

?It?s horrible in here,? busty Brit Louise Meanwell griped to The Post in a phone call from Rikers Island yesterday.

?They throw liquids on me and spit on me. They call me names. They call me a stalker.

?I?m in hell, it?s just awful,? complained Meanwell, who?s being held in the big house on $300,000 bond.

Meanwell is due to resume testimony before the grand jury today and Tuesday, and said that she?ll blow the lid off the case by revealing things about Cashman. She says that he?s guilty of stalking her, and she can?t understand why he?s accusing her of extortion. Cashman?s wife, Mary, filed for divorce the day after prosecutors charged Meanwell with stalking.

(AP) ? A far-reaching majority of lawmakers elected former East German pro-democracy activist Joachim Gauck as Germany's new president Sunday.

The 72-year-old Gauck is an outspoken former Lutheran pastor and relentless advocate of democracy and civil rights who enjoyed the backing of most major parties. He received 991 of the 1,232 ballots cast.

The ex-communist Left party's candidate Beate Klarsfeld secured 126 votes, the far right NPD party's candidate Olaf Rose only three, and there were 108 abstentions, said Norbert Lammert, the President of the Germany's Parliament.

Gauck opposed East Germany's then-communist regime and became head of a federal agency overseeing the files of the Communists' ubiquitous domestic intelligence service after Germany's reunification in 1990.

The candidate appeared moved as he accepted the election to become the country's new head of state, a largely ceremonial role in Germany that has little executive power but is considered an important moral authority.

"I accept this duty. After the long political meanders of the 20th century, I do so with the infinite gratefulness of a person who has finally and unexpectedly found his home again and who had the pleasure of participating in a democratic society over the past 20 years," Gauck told the assembly.

"Very certainly I won't be able to live up to all expectations," he said. "But there is one thing I can promise: I say yes with all of my force and with my heart that I will carry out the responsibility you entrusted to me today."

Gauck, who has no political affiliation, won wide backing from Germany's mainstream parties for the presidency after predecessor Christian Wulff resigned in a corruption scandal last month.

When he was nominated, Chancellor Angela Merkel described Gauck as "a true teacher of democracy." Gauck had run for the opposition against her candidate, Wulff, two years earlier, but Merkel's junior coalition partner pushed her to accept him as president at the second attempt.

On Sunday, Merkel said Germany can be proud of its new president, who was elected with a "very convincing result."

The chancellor, herself daughter of a pastor and another former East German, also said that Gauck's election was a sign of the success of Germany's reunification.

"We can also be a little proud of that," Merkel said, adding that more progress was still required to see eastern Germany catch up fully with the wealthier western part.

In 1989, Gauck, then a pastor based in the northern port city of Rostock, helped initiate protests against the communist regime in his region.

He joined a prominent opposition group in the final phase of hardline communist rule, and after communism fell he was elected in March 1990 to serve as a lawmaker in East Germany's first and only democratically elected Parliament until reunification that October.

Sunday's election came exactly 22 years after that ballot "when millions of East Germans were finally allowed to be citizens after a 56 years long reign of dictators," Gauck said in his acceptance speech.

"At age 50 I had for the first time in my life the chance to vote in a free, equal and secret ballot on who would govern (the country) in the future," he said.

Gauck separated from his wife Gerhild, with whom he has four children, after the country's reunification, but the couple never divorced.

Since 2000, he has been in a relationship with journalist Daniela Schadt. That has raised a few eyebrows among conservatives and led to calls that the president should marry his current partner.

But the incoming first lady, who has said that she will now move in with Gauck in Berlin, told Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag that "the entire family lives well with our arrangement, then maybe the rest of the society should also be able to live with it."

Gauck was one of the leaders of efforts to wind up the Stasi, East Germany's loathed and notoriously invasive secret police.

In January 1990, demonstrators had stormed the Stasi headquarters in East Berlin to prevent the files' destruction. For the next decade, Gauck oversaw the newly created government authority that oversees the 112 miles (180 kilometers) of files collected by the Stasi's network of 85,000 full-time spies and 170,000 voluntary informers.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Gauck's life story of standing up for freedom and civil rights "is also an encouragement for many freedom movements around the world."

Droid Pro update official, change log posted

Droid Pro

A couple days ago we told you about the soak test starting up for the Motorola Droid Pro, and it seems to have passed and version 4.7.3.XT610 has been made official. Verizon has posted the change log and update instructions on their support site, with some critical bugs being addressed. The full list:

  • Improved security with DigiNotar security patch.
  • Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
  • Device will no longer lockup or reset after an Over the Air update.
  • Device will no longer automatically power on after it has been powered off.
  • Pressing the spacebar key will no longer cause the device to lockup.
  • Improvements to keyboard backlighting.
  • Smart Forwarding will no longer cause forwarded messages to remain in the Outbox
  • V CAST Apps is now updated to version 2.00.54.
  • VZ Navigator is now updated to version 7.2.0.461

Users affected by the weird lockup and phantom reboot bugs should be especially happy, and security fixes are always welcome on a device designed for business use. For those who aren't using the Droid Pro for business and have been using other methods to keep it current, don't accept this one until a developer says you can.

There's no timeline when you should expect the update, but as soon as we hear that it's begun rolling out we'll let you know. It's not ICS, but at least Motorola and Verizon didn't forget about the Droid Pro.
