Microsoft announces Office 365 for Government, touts its fluffy cloud-based goodness

Unlike certain folks who wear tinfoil hats Microsoft has no qualms working with the guv'ment. Having added Office 365 support to Windows Phone in its Mango update, the company is now turning its attention to a less tech-averse Uncle Sam with the introduction of the obviously named Office 365 for Government. According to Microsoft, this rendition of Office 365 places US government data in the soft embrace of the cloud via its own segregated community. Offerings featured with the service include Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Lync Online and Office Professional Plus. Now, you don't need to be wearing shiny, crumpled headwear to voice concerns about some evildoer messing around with government data on the cloud. Microsoft assures that the service supports the "most rigorous global and regional standards," including ISO 27001, SAS70 Type II, EU Safe Harbor and FISMA. Given all the waist tightening Uncle Sam's being asked to go through recently, a cloud solution might actually sound appealing if it proves to be more cost-effective overall.

According to the Los Angeles Times, 58 percent of U.S. homes watched prime-time television in August 2011, up from 56 percent in August 2009. Some of the change is surely driven by all that new cable content, but there is a technological component, too. Patricia McDonough, senior vice president of planning policy and analysis at Nielsen, told me that increasing adoption of DVRs?about half of U.S. households now have one?means the summer ratings dip is less pronounced than in the past: ?At 8 o?clock we may still be outdoors, but by 9 or 10, we may be in and watching programming. Now we don?t have to miss our favorite show if it?s on at 8, because we can DVR it and watch it when we get back.? And it?s not just DVRs. Beryl prompts tropical storm warning for NE Florida

The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued a tropical storm warning for residents living in Volusia County.

Subtropical Storm Beryl, the second named storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, is moving west-southwest toward the southeastern coast of the United States at about 6 mph, a speed the Hurricane Center expects to increase through Sunday.

At 11 p.m. Saturday, Beryl's center was located near 30.8 degrees north latitude and 77.2 degrees west longitude, or about 300 miles east-northeast of Jacksonville. The storm is expected to turn west Sunday night, with its center nearing the warning area later that evening. Its current sustained winds are about 50 mph.

Residents of northeastern Florida should expect Beryl to produce mostly wind gusts and up to 2 to 4 inches of rainfall.

Tropical storm force winds are expected to begin across Volusia County and north of Orlando by Sunday afternoon.

The Hurricane Center will release its next advisory at midnight Sunday.

A high risk of rip currents is expected along the northeast Florida coast from Nassau through Flagler counties. A moderate risk of rip currents is also expected along the east central Florida coast from Volusia through Martin counties.

Conditions are expected to be present through Monday. Beach goers should remember to remain alert when red flags are flying.

?In addition to the potential for dangerous rip currents, high waves up to 4 to 6 feet could cause moderate beach erosion and minor coastal flooding,? said State Meteorologist Amy Godsey. ?Beachgoers should remember to review the rip current outlook for their area, check the warning flag signs before entering the water and swim within sight of a lifeguard.??

Tropical storm warnings are in effect from the Volusia and Brevard County line through South Carolina. The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a tropical storm watch for Baker, Bradford, Clay, Union, and Putnam Counties.

Beryl is projected to move west-southwest into Northeast Florida or southern Georgia Sunday night through Monday night, briefly stalling, then turning northeast towards South Carolina ahead of an approaching cold front. As it moves inland, it is expected to decrease in intensity into a tropical or subtropical depression.

Bobcats part ways with Silas, begin search for new coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The worst team in NBA history will have a new coach next season.

The Charlotte Bobcats have decided not to renew coach Paul Silas' contract after the team finished 7-59 this season for the worst winning percentage in league history (.106).

"We have been talking internally about what is best for us going forward," Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said at a news conference Monday. "The record kind of speaks for itself. When you look at the youthfulness of this roster ... we just all felt collectively that the change was something we wanted to do at this time."

The 68-year-old Silas, who told The Associated Press late in the season he wanted to "see things through" and coach one more year, said Monday he found out earlier in the day he would not be brought back.

Silas said he was not surprised by the decision.

"I'm ok with that," he said. "I have had a very successful career coaching and playing and it's time to move on."

Silas said he was promised a job in the organization by team owner Michael Jordan and said he's retiring from coaching.

It's unclear who'll replace Silas, who leaves with a 32-88 record at Charlotte. Higgins said a search for his replacement will begin immediately.

"We do not have a timetable. We will start as soon as this presser is over," he said. "I just don't want to say there is a time frame. We plan on interviewing quite a few people. We want to find the right guy."

Higgins said Silas' son, Stephen Silas - who served as an assistant under his father and led the team in several games - will be interviewed for the job, but added finding someone with heading coaching experience "is important."

"We want someone who wants to win," Higgins said. "That's the main quality. We will have quite a few candidates. I would say there are quite a few people who come into mind."

Finding someone who might be interested in taking over the last-place Bobcats might not be easy. They're light on talent and experience and it could be a long way from competing for a playoff spot.

Bobcats general manager Rich Cho is aware this job might not be for everyone.

"Those are the type of coaches we don't want to bring in," Cho said. "I want somebody that will relish the opportunity and look at it as a challenge. It's really easy to go to a winning team and take that opportunity. But I want somebody in here that's going to look at this as a great opportunity and a challenge and a chance to build something from the ground up."

Silas was in a difficult situation heading into the season with a young and inexperienced team, plus a shortened offseason that limited practice time. Injuries to top players like Corey Maggette, D.J. Augustin and Gerald Henderson did not help.

"I respect Paul to the utmost," Higgins said. "He wanted to be successful but it was an unfortunate thing that it didn't happen."

Late in the season, Silas was involved in an altercation with forward Tyrus Thomas, shoving him in the locker room following a loss. The two had gotten into an argument and had to be separated.

But Higgins said that didn't factor into the decision to part ways with Silas.

Players tried to rally to his defense after the season to save his job, but to no avail.

"I think Paul did the best he could with the guys he had on the floor," Maggette said Friday. "We went through a year where night after night guys were going down with injuries and you're shooting under 30 percent from the field. You just can't win any games that way. That's tough. So hopefully they give him an opportunity to show what type of a coach he is and what he can bring to the table here."

But in the end it was hard for the Bobcats to justify keeping him.

They were last in the league in scoring and shooting percentage and lost 22 games by 20 or more points.

Silas said he's unsure what role he'll have with the Bobcats moving forward, but hopes to have some input on personnel decisions.

The Bobcats are guaranteed one of the top four picks in the NBA draft and could have the No. 1 pick overall and a shot at Kentucky's Anthony Davis. They're also expected to be extremely aggressive in free agency, trying to build with some young talent.

"I really know this team and I think I understand this team better than anyone because I've had them for a whole year," Silas said. "So I hope I can be a part of making some decisions as to who we bring in here... All I want to do is see this team be successful. The people in Charlotte deserve it."

Silas entered the season with a career coaching mark of 380-429 and a 13-16 mark in the playoffs in 11 seasons as an NBA coach. He previously coached the San Diego Clippers, Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers.

As for Silas' assistant coaches, their contracts expire on June 30. No decision has been made as to their future.

Were Hillary Clinton's Delegates Stolen in 2008?

During a recent online political discussion that I participated in, someone made the claim that some of Hillary Clinton's delegates were stolen by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in 2008. This person then went on to claim that this "theft" of delegates was the deciding factor in Clinton's loss of the Democratic presidential nomination to Barack Obama in 2008. But was this really the case?

The person making this claim was referring to delegates from the states of Michigan and Florida. In 2008, both Michigan and Florida decided to hold their primaries very early in the season, despite warnings from the DNC that it would strip them of their convention delegates if they did. Undeterred, both states held their primaries when they had originally decided to. The DNC then made good on its threat and stripped both states of all of their convention delegates before any votes were cast in the 2008 primary season.?

This action by the DNC rendered both states' primaries nothing more than "beauty contests." As a result, Barack Obama, John Edwards, and most of the other major candidates decided not to put their names on the ballot in those states.

They did it partially in deference to the traditionally early caucus and primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire. They did not want to risk offending the voters in those states by competing in the contests in other states that were infringing on their time-honored tradition of going first. Besides, there were no delegates to be gained by competing in the Michigan and Florida primaries. They saw those states as a lose-lose situation, and therefore avoided them like the plague.

Hillary Clinton, other the other hand, decided to gamble on Michigan and Florida. She felt that the DNC would eventually concede and grant delegate slates to both states at the convention. She reasoned that the Democratic Party would not want to do something that would alienate two states that the eventual nominee would need to win in the fall. She also assumed that if she won big in those states ? as she was probably going to as the only major candidate on the ballot ? she would get the lion's share of the delegates that were eventually allocated.?

Well, Clinton turned out to be right ? and wrong. She was right in assuming that the DNC would not want to alienate Michigan and Florida by not allowing them to have any delegates at the convention. Therefore, she was also right in assuming that Michigan and Florida would be allotted some convention delegates. However, she was wrong in her assumption that she would get the biggest majority of them.

In June of that year, after all of the primaries and caucuses had been completed, a DNC subcommittee held a meeting and assigned Clinton and Obama about the same number of Michigan and Florida delegates, despite the fact that Clinton had won both states overwhelmingly and Obama was not on the ballot in either. Clinton and her supporters were furious at this outcome, which allowed Obama to maintain his delegate lead and eventually win the nomination. Clinton was counting on overtaking him, had the delegate allocation gone the way she had wanted.

So, despite what some bitter Clinton supporters may think to this day, no delegates were ever stolen from her. She basically gambled on a particular outcome and lost. And how fair would it have been to award Clinton the majority of the Michigan and Florida delegates when the DNC had decided up front that no delegates would be awarded for those states? That would have amounted to changing the rules in the middle of the game. Obama and others had based their decision not to complete in those states on the fact that there were no delegates up for grabs.
