Updated at 5:15 p.m. ET: Other than having to chase some motorists, skateboarders, and walkers off a 10-mile stretch of Highway 405 in Los Angeles, few problems were reported in the early hours of "Carmageddon II," officials said on Saturday.
The stretch of one of the world's busiest freeways was shut down early Saturday, and if all goes according to plan it'll stay that way until a bridge is rebuilt before the Monday morning traffic crunch.
Construction crews with giant cranes on Saturday chipped away at a bridge spanning the 405, with pieces of concrete dropping dozens of feet to the ground below. A four-foot pad of dirt laid down in advance protected the pavement from the falling debris.
The work is to widen the bridge itself to expand the freeway below.?
For weeks drivers have been warned to stay away from the segment of Interstate 405 that is now shuttered through the Sepulveda Pass on Los Angeles' west side for the entire weekend.
If drivers don't avoid the area, officials warn, a city-wide traffic jam could result. But beyond just scare tactics, city officials have been encouraging Southern Californians to get out and enjoy their own neighborhoods on foot, on bikes or via short drives on surface streets.
During a similar closure last year commuters stayed away from the freeway in droves, the shutdown was considered a success, and crews finished the first phase of the work early.
This time, the contractor faces a penalty if the work isn't done in 53 hours: $6,000 per lane of freeway per 10 minutes.
Watch live video from NBCLosAngeles.com of bridge demolition:
Meanwhile, TV news crews have a plan to avoid a traffic jam in the sky as they cover the shutdown.
Residents complained of low-flying, noisy helicopters hovering nonstop over the region last year.
Watch video report from NBCLosAngeles.com as Carmageddon 2 officially begins:
"It was constant," Richard Close, president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, whose members live in many of the homes closest to the freeway, recently told The Associated Press. "It was a combination of the news media paparazzi and tour operators taking people who wanted to get a picture of the 405."
Although the area gets its share of paparazzi helicopters because of Charlie Sheen and other celebrities who live in the area, Close said they usually go away when the sun sets. During Carmageddon, however, the area is brightly illuminated overnight so construction workers can safely do their jobs.
This time, local television news directors have plans to pool coverage by using video from a single helicopter making limited flights over the freeway, according to Rick Terrell, executive director of the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California.?

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.
V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
But all is not lost - honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.
To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.
In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.
Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

It?s safe to say there?s no shortage of inspirational women in the Women?s National Basketball Association (WNBA)! Earlier this year I featured WNBA President, Laurel J. Richie and Chicago Sky Head Coach, Pokey Chatman. Today, I?m excited to introduce you to the WNBA?s 2011 Most Valuable Player, Tamika Catchings, who plays for the Indiana Fever. Additionally, she?s a Dribble to Stop Diabetes Campaign Ambassador and co-founder of the Catch the Stars Foundation.
Q: How did you get started playing basketball?
A: My father was an NBA player for eleven years, playing for various teams including the Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers. I really got started playing by watching my dad. I have an older brother and an older sister, so between the three of us we were very active and always playing sports.
Another reason I got involved in sports was because I was born with hearing problems, so I had to wear hearing aids and had a speech problem. Back then, I didn?t have the little hearing aids, I had the big ones and as a young girl that?s really not the thing that makes you popular. I remember just wanting to fit in and be normal and be like everybody else. I always got made fun of because of the way that I talked.
Sports really became an avenue for me just to be able to fit in and to be like everybody else. I knew that if I got made fun of off the court I could say, ?Hey, let?s go play basketball? or ?Let?s go play soccer.? I knew that some things in life I wouldn?t be able to change, but with sports I could always work harder and get better.
In seventh grade, I found my passion for basketball. I would go outside and play and play and play and it was just something that I loved. I enjoyed volleyball and still played until I went to college. I ran track and field into my junior year but during seventh grade, I decided that I was going to follow in my dad?s footsteps and play in the NBA. That was my dream.
Q: You?ve carried that dream through to playing in the WNBA. What are some of the lessons you have learned playing at that level?
A: The WNBA is very professional and, as a professional athlete, it?s your responsibility to take care of yourself and your body. In college you really don?t have a choice because the team does everything together, including eating. In the WNBA, you have a schedule of practice times and games. In between practices and games, it?s up to you to make sure you?re getting in the weight room. You need to make sure that if you need to get extra cardio, that you?re doing it. And you have to make sure you?re eating right. Unlike college, there aren?t people watching you and making sure you?re getting everything done.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your Catch the Stars Foundation?
A: We work with boys and girls ages 7 to 15 and we offer sports-related and education-related programs. In the beginning, my sister and I started by offering basketball camps. Eventually, we were hosting so many different types of programs, we decided to start the Catch the Stars Foundation and put all of our different programs under that organization. Since then, we have added mentoring programs and we?re continuing to grow.
I love being able to impact the kids, especially early on, when you can involve them and guide them and lead them, you can tell that it makes a difference in their future.
Q: You?re now a spokesperson for Dribble to Stop Diabetes. Why did you decide to become so involved in the program?
A: Diabetes runs in my family. My nephew has type 2 diabetes and one of my aunts has type 1 diabetes. I realize that diabetes affects all of us. For me it?s really important to know what?s in my family, to make sure that I stay active and eat as healthy as I can.
Plus, Dribble to Stop Diabetes correlates directly with what I?m already doing with my job so it is a perfect fit. This is about setting an example. Any time you have kids looking up to you, it?s important to share the right message. When parents ask questions about diabetes and I can encourage them to look at the website, take a risk assessment, and talk to a doctor, then I think we?re promoting the right behavior.
Q: You mentioned how important kids are to you, any words of wisdom that you share with kids you meet?
A: It?s all about dreams and setting goals. In all of the programs that I?m involved in, we have them sit down and write goals. We talk about short-term goals and long-term goals.
A lot of people think that setting goals has to be a big thing. It can be, or it can be a simple daily task. It can be as big or little as you want. I was in seventh grade when I made my goal. The WNBA wasn?t even here and I knew what I wanted. I had a dream of what I wanted to do. To think about what I wanted to do in?seventh grade and to actually be doing it, it?s amazing.
It really is amazing! Tamika is such an inspiration and I think we can all take note from her experience and strive to accomplish our goals. All it takes is a dream and hard work. Thanks Tamika!
All the best,
Laura K.

Children ages 2-11 view an alarming amount of television shows that contain forms of social bullying or social aggression. Physical aggression in television for children is greatly documented, but this is the first in-depth analysis on children's exposure to behaviors like cruel gossiping and manipulation of friendship.
Nicole Martins, Indiana University, and Barbara J. Wilson, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, published in the Journal of Communication a content analysis of the 50 most popular children's shows according to Nielsen Media Research. One hundred and fifty television shows were viewed and analyzed, and 92% of the programming contained some version of social aggression?approximately 14 times per hour. There was careful attention to what was portrayed in the cases of social aggression, whether the behavior was rewarded or punished, justified, or committed by an attractive perpetrator.
The findings suggested that some of the ways in which social aggression is contextualized make these depictions particularly problematic for young viewers. The study found that attractive characters who perpetrated social aggression were rarely punished for their behavior, and that socially aggressive scenes were significantly more likely than physically aggressive scenes to be presented in a humorous way. In some cases, social aggression on television may pose more of a risk than portrayals of physical aggression do.
"These findings should help parents and educators recognize that there are socially aggressive behaviors on programs children watch. Parents should not assume that a program is okay for their child to watch simply because it does not contain physical violence. Parents should be more aware of portrayals that may not be explicitly violent in a physical sense but are nonetheless antisocial in nature," Martins said.
"Martins and Wilson's research shows just how important it is to broaden our view of 'violence' beyond the physical; particularly as their findings indicate that social violence like insults and name calling occurs just as commonly in children's programming," said Amy Jordan, director of the Media and the Developing Child sector at the University of Pennsylvania and Chair of the Children, Adolescents and the Media Division of the International Communication Association.
"As a society, we need to acknowledge that our children are learning to be socially aggressive, and that one source of this learning may be the television shows they watch. We may not see physical manifestations of this type of violence, but children who are victims of social aggression from their peers may develop deep and lasting emotional scars."

The European Commission?s new strategy for ?Unleashing the potential of cloud computing in Europe? outlines actions to deliver a net gain of 2.5 million new European jobs, and an annual boost of EUR 160 billion to EU GDP (around 1%), by 2020. The strategy is designed to speed up and increase the use of cloud computing across the economy. ?Cloud computing? refers to the storage of data (such as text files, pictures and video) and software on remote computers, which users access over the internet on the device of their choice. This is faster, cheaper, more flexible and potentially more secure than on-site IT solutions. Many popular services such as Facebook, Spotify and web-based email use cloud computing technologies but the real economic benefits come through widespread use of cloud solutions by businesses and the public sector.

I have always felt alternately fascinated and frustrated by carob chips. They're advertised as a low-sugar chocolate substitute, but as any true chocolate devotee will confirm, they are definitely not chocolate. So what's up with carob chips? Do you ever bake with them?
Carob chips are made from the pod of the carob tree, a small Mediterranean shrub. The pods are dried, roasted, and ground into carob powder before being made into chips or used in other applications.
Carob is less bitter than chocolate and has a natural sweetness. The chips require little or no added sugar to make them palatable. To me, carob chips have a roasted flavor that makes them similar to chocolate, but lack chocolate's richness and melty texture.
To its low-sugar character profile, also add the fact that carob chips are low in fat, high in fiber, and contain no caffeine. They can be substituted one-for-one with chocolate chips in any recipe and used to make vegan-friendly treats.
Carob chips definitely have a lot going for them! I actually think the biggest thing to keep in mind when baking with them is that they're not chocolate. I mean this in a genuine way: don't expect carob chips to taste exactly like chocolate. They are their own ingredient with their own particular flavor and texture.
Before using them for the first time, taste a few on their own and think about what recipes they might work best in. Personally, I like them best in baked goods that have a slightly savory component, like granola bars or zucchini bread.
Do you bake with carob chips? What are your favorite recipes that use them?

Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards, a married couple living in New Jersey, said their engagement photo was altered from the original by the group, Public Advocate of the United States, which opposes gay marriage, in mailers sent during campaigning for Republican statehouse seats in Colorado.
By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News
Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards posed for their engagement photo, holding hands and kissing, in front of the Brooklyn Bridge in 2010. The image captured one of the happiest days of their lives. But earlier this year, their special moment was soured when the photo was used in two anti-gay mailers in Colorado.
On Wednesday, the couple and their photographer filed a lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Colorado against Public Advocate of the United States, a nonprofit that opposes same-sex marriage. They are seeking a court order saying the group violated the law, damages, costs and attorney fees for the allegedly unauthorized use of the copyrighted photo.
?We want to take back the beautiful moment in our lives that was reflected in our engagement photo before it was hijacked,? Edwards, a 32-year-old college administrator living in Montclair, N.J., told NBC News on Monday before traveling to Colorado to file the lawsuit. ?We also ? want to take a stand for others who might be similarly targeted in the future.?
The couple, who met in New York in 2000, got engaged in December 2009. The next year in May, photographer Kristina Hill snapped their engagement photos. The pair married later that year in a civil ceremony in Connecticut.
?All that we did was what any other couple would do to mark their engagement and have these photos taken for family and friends to share our joy and our excitement and help people (see) what path we were taking toward our wedding,? said Privitere, 37. ?It was a great, great day for us.?
Kristina Hill/Kristina Hill Photography
This original engagement photo of Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards was taken on May 23, 2010. The couple married in Connecticut later that year.
The couple alleged that Public Advocate seized upon that personal moment to spread what Edwards called a ?message of hate? in two mailers it sent this spring during Republican primary races for the Colorado statehouse.
One of the mailers targeted State Sen. Jean White, who supported a bill that would have granted same-sex civil unions. Across the couple?s image were the words: ?State Senator Jean White?s Idea of ?Family Values??? The other one, aimed at House candidate Jeffrey Hare, read: ?Jeffrey Hare?s Vision for Weld County?? Both candidates lost their races.

A friend alerted the couple to the mailers in late June. It?s not clear how Public Advocate got the photo, which the pair had posted to a blog about their engagement and impending nuptials. They say the group never asked the couple or Hill to use it.
When contacted by NBC News for comment on the lawsuit, Eugene Delgaudio, president of Public Advocate, said in an email that he was looking into it but did not elaborate or provide further remarks.
?The use of Tom and Brian?s likenesses, or of Kristina?s copyrighted photo, was wholly gratuitous,? said their attorney, Christine Sun, of the Southern Poverty Law Center. ?Public Advocate could have just paid for a stock photo of a gay couple kissing but instead Public Advocate decided to take this very personal photo of this happy moment and use it to attack gay people.?
? ? the doctrine of fair use is not intended to allow people to use copyrighted work just because it?s cheaper than paying for something,? she added.
The couple has experienced sleepless nights and anxiety since they learned of the mailer. They?re concerned about the impact of the mailers upon others who may have seen it, such as gay youth and families who may be struggling with accepting them.
?Colorado is a positive step in trying to right a wrong,? said Privitere, who works in entertainment ticketing. ?We?re nervous to be thrust into the public spotlight again. We?re nervous that we?re not going to represent our community the best that we can. But we?re going to do all that we can to try to fix or make this right.?

In his new tell-all memoir, Arnold Schwarzenegger lays out exactly how he was blindsided by ex-wife Maria Shriver when she waited until he left office to set up a couples' counseling session to confront him about the child he secretly had with the couple's housekeeper.
In the book called "Total Recall," due out next week, Schwarzenegger says that it was on Jan. 4, 2011, when he and Shriver entered a therapist's office for a meeting initiated by her the day after his term as governor of California came to an end.
"The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child -- whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,'" the actor and former pol wrote in the book. "I told the therapist, 'It's true.'"
Schwarzenegger says he then started groveling, telling his wife that he had "screwed up" and that she was the "perfect wife," and that he was still "turned on" by her. It didn't work, and Shriver separated from him, and later filed for divorce.
In the book, Schwarzenegger says he had sex with housekeeper Mildred Baena in 1996 in the family guest house while Shriver and their kids were away on vacation and he was in town filming "Batman and Robin."
Schwarzenegger, 65, says that for years he tried to convince himself that Baena's husband was the father of their son, Joseph. But when the boy grew up and the resemblance to Schwarzenegger was so strong, he writes, "I realized there was little doubt that he was my son."
This hiding of the tryst and his secret speculation about his biological son all happened while Schwarzenegger watched as Shriver defended him from allegations of infidelity.
"I am my own woman," Shiver said in a 2003 appearance on "Oprah." "I have not been, quote, "bred," to look the other way."
Schwarzenegger says he kept the affair and the fact that he was Joseph's father a secret partly because he was embarrassed, and also because he didn't want to face up to his wife's family, the Kennedys.
"Instead of doing the right thing, I'd just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn't deal with it every day," he writes.
In the book, Schwarzenegger also notes a parting shot he says Shriver, 56, took after their marriage ended. During the funeral for her father, Sargent Shriver, his now ex-wife described the respect he had for her mom.
"The way he admired her and respected her, when I think about it today, it actually takes my breath away," she said.
Schwarzenegger, who was in the audience, says that comment might have been "partly directed at me."
Schwarzenegger says he still doesn't know why he cheated, but that it was probably a mixture of stupidity and arrogance, he writes.
The star also writes that he still hopes to reunite with Shriver.
"You can call this denial," he writes. "But it's the way my mind works."

A new report titled An Overview of the "Patent Trolls" Debate [PDF] is a balanced but ultimately devastating indictment of "patent trolls." It was prepared by the Congressional Research Service for members of Congress, who could actually do something about the "troll" problem. It's a useful primer for those new to the area.
First, apologies to any who are offended by use of the word "trolls." As the report points out, the problem is that the term is not only pejorative, but also somewhat vague. It notes the common use of the more polite term "non-practicing entities" (NPEs), but favors using instead "patent-assertion entities" (PAEs). These are entities that speculate by buying patents with a view to asserting them against parties that usually have independently invented, produced, and marketed the technology at issue. I'm fine with "PAE," which really is clearer, and also points toward an irresistible pun: all a PAE does is make you pay.
The report recognizes the case that "PAEs impede innovation, undermine the patent system, and wreak havoc on businesses that play a vital role in the American economy." It also notes that PAEs contend they provide benefits by compensating small inventors and managing the risks of investments in research and invention. These benefits may exist, according to the report, but they "are significantly outweighed by the costs."
The Congressional Research Service report does a good job of quickly explaining the dynamics of ordinary PAE cases. "[P]atent litigation is expensive, and there is no quick or affordable way to get rid of a patent suit except to settle. Defendants frequently find settlement the most cost-effective option, even if they are certain that they are not infringing." In addition, "[u]nlike most patentee-plaintiffs, PAEs pursuing infringement suits ?do not risk disruption to their core business' because ?patent enforcement is their core business."
One fresh point of the report is research that indicates "that PAE activity could harm competition to the extent that operating companies use or ?sponsor' PAEs as a means of imposing costs on rivals and achieving other anticompetitive ends." That is, real companies are promoting PAE attacks on rivals. In my view, the PAE model is basically coin-operated (think "show me the money!") and indifferent to any other social objective. The fundamental amorality of that model is disturbing, but the nascent expansion and corporatization of that model is even more so.
The report lists without endorsing various possible legislative options for addressing the PAE problem. Currently pending is the Saving High-Tech Innovators from Egregious Legal Disputes (SHIELD) Act, which would provide for the possibility of requiring that a losing plaintiff pay defendant's legal costs in cases involving computer hardware or software patents. This could discourage some PAE suits, although it could be criticized both for leaving some PAE lawsuits untouched and discouraging some non-PAE suits.
Among other potential reforms noted in the report is strengthening enforcement of the definiteness and disclosure requirements of Section 112 of the Patent Act. This could result in invalidation of abstract or ambiguous patents. Congress could also decrease the period for IT patents to less than the current 20-year period.
Another interesting idea is a rule that failure to practice a patent for a number of years could be treated as evidence of abandonment. In such cases, the plaintiff would be required to show efforts to undertake commercial activity in order to proceed. Because most PAE cases are based on older patents, this could stop many such cases.
As the report points out, the law could be changed to eliminate the presumption of validity applicable to existing patents. Under current law, this presumption is rebuttable only by clear and convincing evidence, rather than the more common preponderance of the evidence standard. This standard makes it difficult to invalidate the patents of patent aggressors.
Another possibility is changing the method for calculating damages in a patent case. Software products may involve hundreds of potentially patentable components. A reform could address the risk under that a finding of infringement relating to only one minor component could result in disproportionate damages.
What about a change in the law to eliminate patents for software? The report touches on this possibility, noting that the proposed SHIELD Act would treat software as a special category of invention. It also notes that the old argument that such an approach might be barred by international treaty (the TRIPS agreement) is not decisive. Although many consider this approach too radical to be viable, it's good to see that the Congressional Research Service is not prepared to rule it out.
These and other reform ideas are worth much more discussion. Given the impending election, it's unlikely we'll see any legislative activity addressing the PAE problem in the near future. But the report furnishes data that will be useful in future debates. In the meantime, we've got some presidential debates coming up. Maybe somebody can ask the candidates what they plan to do about the problems of software patents and PAEs.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Seattle sacked Aaron Rodgers eight times but the Seahawks held just a 7-6 lead over the Green Bay Packers after three quarters Monday night.
After being held to just 87 yards in the first half, the Packers began to find their rhythm on offense in the third quarter and two field goals by Mason Crobsy pulled them within one heading into the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks kept the high-powered Packers offense searching for answers and picking their quarterback off the turf in the first half as Seattle hit Rodgers a lot more than the eight sacks.
Chris Clemons brought down Rodgers four times and Brandon Mebane and first-round draft pick Bruce Irvin both got to Rodgers twice. Irvin was causing havoc for Green Bay right tackle Bryan Bulaga in the first quarter, running around and through him for two sacks to halt drives.
The eight sacks in the first half tied the most Rodgers has ever been sacked in a game. He was sacked eight times by Minnesota in 2009. The record for most sacks in a game is 12, five times, most recently the New York Giants against Philadelphia in 2007. Seattle's team record is 11.
The Packers committed to the running game after halftime as Green Bay gained 111 yards in the third quarter. Cedric Benson managed to find running room on cutbacks to give Green Bay their first sustained drive of the game to open the third quarter.
Benson carried the ball seven times for 34 yards as Green Bay entered Seattle's red zone for the first time. But the 13-play drive stalled when a pass from Rodgers bounced off the hands of an open Donald Driver in the end zone and forced the Packers to settle for a 29-yard field goal.
A personal foul penalty on the ensuing kickoff gave Seattle good field position but the Seahawks went in reverse. Seattle started the drive on their own 42-yard line and then found themselves back on their own 15 after a false start, a 19-yard sack of Russell Wilson by Nick Perry and a delay of game penalty.
A booming punt from Jon Ryan backed the Packers up to their own 12-yard line but Green Bay was able to drive again. On third down, Rodgers rolled out to his left and found Jermichael Finley for a 31-yard gain to get the Packers out near midfield. Seattle had a chance to get off the field after holding Benson short on a third-down run, but an illegal hands to the face penalty on Brandon Browner kept the drive alive. Seattle finally came up with a stop and held Green Bay to a 40-yard field goal to pull within a point.
Benson had 52 yards on 12 carries and Rodgers was 19 of 27 for 149 yards through the third quarter. Seattle had 11 penalties for 90 yards.
Wilson connected with Golden Tate for a 41-yard touchdown pass to give Seattle the lead midway through the second quarter.
An unnecessary roughness call on D.J. Smith after a run by Seattle's Marshawn Lynch moved the ball into Green Bay territory and the Seahawks immediately took a shot at the end zone. Tate ran a double-move that beat cornerback Tramon Williams and Wilson dropped the pass in over the top to give Seattle the first score of the game.
Seattle' opening possession stalled after a false start penalty against Russell Okung moved the Seahawks into a third-and-long that they were unable to convert.
The Seahawks rode Lynch to shift field position in their favor early on. Lynch hammered away for gains for 8 yards, 6 and 6 and Wilson was 3 for 6 on the drive to push into Green Bay territory. Seattle was forced to punt and backed up the Packers to their own 1-yard line where the punt was downed by Ben Obomanu.
Green Bay was able to get out of danger but the drive stalled after an illegal hands to the face penalty on Josh Sitton backed up the Packers again. Irvin ran around Bulaga for his second sack of Rodgers.
Lynch provided the bulk of Seattle's first-half offense with 78 yards on 19 carries. Wilson was 5 of 11 for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Cat lovers will attest to the pleasure of having an affectionate kitty snuggling up to you while you answer an email, or post to face book. However, that cute little pussycat can be causing your computer all sorts of difficulties! Lost data or the loss of productivity due to computer problems makes cats and computers not a good mix.
A recent computer cleanup was urgently required largely due to pet hair. The householder had two different cats, as well as an elderly dog. The fan that cooled the computer was so blocked with cat hair it caused the fan to shut down and it resulted in a fried computer. A periodic cleaning behind the computer would have made a great deal of difference.
It is also not advisable to have the sweet bundle of fur walk across your keyboard. The hair that is shed, gets lodged in the keys, and can cause a variety of difficulties. If you use a mouse pad with a rolling ball, you may also find pet hair plugging it too. As well, cat urine is not a good lubricant for your computer, and it happens more often than you would like to think.
Having your LCD screen covered in scratches because your cat attacked the critters on the screen is frustrating. So try to keep your kitty away from the work area around your computer, for dust free, and cat hair free results.
There are software utilities that can be used to discourage cats from walking on your computer. When a cat-like typing pattern is detected, it emits a sound that is unpleasant to cats. One source quoted the number of cat owners that are backing up their data daily, as being at less than 10 percent; while the number of cat owners that should be backing up their data daily is 100 percent! Cats do have a way of ?pouncing? when we would rather they hadn?t. Set your computer to auto save frequently and don?t lose your data.
Another good practice is to not place a computer directly on a carpet. The fan will suck up the pet hair and lint which will require the cleaning of the fan area on a much more regular basis, or risk the overheating problem.
Keep the printer paper tray retracted as much as possible, to prevent accidental breakage.
You can keep your keyboard covered when you shut down, or you might store it by standing it upright. If you want to prevent a cat from chewing on cords, they can be sprayed with a commercial cat repellent, or a mixture of Tabasco and water, but be sure to unplug the cords before you apply the protective coating.
When you leave the room, remember to turn off the computer. This will allow it to cool down, and make it less appealing to your feline friends. Have a cover over the computer will keep stray hair and dust out too.
One last tip for when you clean the cat hair and dander off your monitor: do not spray a liquid directly onto your monitor. This can lead to liquid dripping down the screen and causing malfunctions. If you would like to use a damp cloth on your monitor, spray the liquid directly onto the cloth instead.
Many people are now deciding that cats and computers don?t mix, so despite your mutual enjoyment of sitting together, keeping the computer room door shut, might prove to be the best method for keeping your computer problem free.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? The man known to a generation of Americans as "The Science Guy" is condemning efforts by some Christian groups to cast doubts on evolution and lawmakers who want to bring the Bible into science classrooms.
Bill Nye, a mechanical engineer and star of the popular 1990s TV show "Bill Nye The Science Guy," has waded into the evolution debate with an online video that urges parents not to pass their religious-based doubts about evolution on to their children.
Nye has spent a career teaching science to children and teens with good-natured and sometimes silly humor, but has not been known to delve into topics as divisive as evolution.
Christians who view the stories of the Old Testament as historical fact have come to be known as creationists, and many argue that the world was created by God just a few thousand years ago.
"The Earth is not 6,000 or 10,000 years old," Nye said in an interview with The Associated Press, citing scientists' estimates that it is about 4.5 billion years old. "It's not. And if that conflicts with your beliefs, I strongly feel you should question your beliefs."
Millions of Americans do hold those beliefs, according to a June Gallup poll that found 46 percent of Americans believe God created humans in their present form about 10,000 years ago.
Nye, 56, also decried efforts in recent years by lawmakers and school boards in some states to present Bible stories as an alternative to evolution in public schools. Tennessee passed a law earlier this year that protects teachers who let students criticize evolution and other scientific theories. That echoes a Louisiana law passed in 2008 that allows teachers to introduce supplemental teaching materials in science classes.
"If we raise a generation of students who don't believe in the process of science, who think everything that we've come to know about nature and the universe can be dismissed by a few sentences translated into English from some ancient text, you're not going to continue to innovate," Nye said in a wide-ranging telephone interview.
The brief online video was not Nye's first foray into the combustible debate, but "it's the first time it's gotten to be such a big deal."
"I can see where one gets so caught up in this (debate) that you say something that will galvanize people in a bad way, that will make them hate you forever," he said. "But I emphasize that I'm not questioning someone's religion ? much of that is how you were brought up."
In the video he tells adults they can dismiss evolution, "but don't make your kids do it. Because we need them." Posted by Big Think, an online knowledge forum, the clip went viral and has 4.6 million views on YouTube. It has garnered 182,000 comments from critics and supporters.
It drew the ire of the creationism group Answers in Genesis, which built a biblically based Creation Museum in Kentucky that teaches the stories of the Old Testament and has attracted headlines for its assertion that dinosaurs roamed alongside Adam and Eve.
The group produced a response video featuring two scientists who say the Bible has the true account of Earth's origins, and that "children should be exposed to both ideas concerning our past."
Nye, who is prone to inject dry humor into scientific discussions, said Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.
"What I find troubling, when you listen to these people ... once in a while I get the impression that they're not kidding," Nye said.
Ken Ham, a co-founder of Answers in Genesis, said dating methods used by scientists to measure the age of the earth are contradictory and many don't point to millions or billions of years of time.
"We say the only dating method that is absolute is the Word of God," Ham said. "Time is the crucial factor for Bill Nye. Without the time of millions of years, you can't postulate evolution change."
America is home to the world's biggest creationist following, Ham said, and the $27 million Creation Museum has averaged about 330,000 visitors a year since it opened just south of Cincinnati in 2007.

When it launched with iOS 6 this Wednesday, Apple's Passbook mobile-ticketing feature boasted a handful of high-profile partners -- including Fandango, Live Nation, Lufthansa and Ticketmaster -- but that list still leaves plenty of room for fleshing out. According to Venture Beat, AmEx is launching integration with Passbook later today. The credit card company's Passbook functionality will include notifications for new account transactions, along with the ability to view your current balance and redeem membership rewards points. The service can also use smartphones' location to verify charges flagged as suspicious.
Starbucks, which was featured in an early Passbook demo at WWDC, also announced the timeline for its integration with the service, tweeting today that an "update is coming at the end of the month" and offering no further details. Judging by Apple's earlier previews, Passbook will let customers pay with a Starbucks card. The coffee chain's Passbook functionality looks to be quite similar to its partnership with Square, which will be the go-to mobile payments option for non-iOS customers when it launches this fall.

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) ? Facing criticism that he's too focused on raising campaign cash, Mitt Romney is about to launch what advisers call an "intense battleground state schedule." But on Saturday, the Republican presidential nominee focused exclusively on courting donors in a state that hasn't supported a Republican presidential candidate in almost a quarter century.
Speaking to roughly 650 supporters gathered at Grand Del Mar, a luxury hotel north of San Diego, Romney said his campaign schedule has been hectic.
"I'm not even going to be able to go home today," he said of his second home in nearby La Jolla. "We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going. It's nonstop."
The former Massachusetts governor's schedule, particularly his focus on fundraising over campaigning in battleground states with voters, has drawn criticism from some Republicans who fear the campaign is moving in the wrong direction less than seven weeks before Election Day. President Barack Obama on Saturday campaigned in Wisconsin, which has emerged as a swing state, where he also raised money.
Polls suggest that Obama has a narrow lead in several key states.
Romney adviser Kevin Madden defended the fundraising focus, while highlighting a shift in the coming days
"We're here raising the resources we're going to need to compete in all those battleground states through Election Day," Madden said. "That's also been matched with a really intense battle ground state schedule that's going to be coming up starting Sunday night. We're keeping very busy."
Over the last week, Romney has attended five public events and at least a dozen fundraisers.
Cognizant of the criticism, his campaign added a Colorado rally to his Sunday night schedule ahead of a three-day bus tour in Ohio. He'll also campaign in Virginia next week. All three states are considered highly competitive.
The shift comes as Romney works to get his campaign back on track.
Already facing reports of campaign infighting, Romney suffered another setback early in the week after his remarks surfaced in an unauthorized video declaring that almost half of Americans are dependent upon government and believe they are victims. On Friday, Romney released his 2011 tax returns showing income of $13.6 million, largely from investment income.
Earlier in the week, conservative columnist Peggy Noonan called Romney's campaign "incompetent."
"Romney doesn't seem to be out there campaigning enough. He seems_in this he is exactly like the president_to always be disappearing into fund-raisers, and not having enough big public events," wrote the former Ronald Reagan speechwriter.
Romney, who would be among the wealthiest presidents ever elected, has struggled to shed the image of an out-of-touch millionaire.
At the Saturday fundraiser donors paid as much as $25,000 to attend, he did little to help that image. He told the audience he spent the night before raising money at a San Francisco area mansion.
"Property up there is, I'm sure, very, very expensive. And we got to her driveway ? it was at least a mile long, up and up, it's like, Oh my goodness, how in the world?" Romney said. "And then we came to the home, and it was like San Simeon, you know, the Hearst castle. It was this beautiful home with gardens, manicured gardens, and a pool and a topiary and so forth."
Romney charged that the president is taking America on a "pathway to become like Europe," adding a jab at his audience's home state.
"Europe doesn't work there. It's never going to work here," Romney said. "It's even possible we could be on a pathway to become California ? I don't want that either."
He later said he was joking.
And before promising that he was done raising money in the San Diego area, Romney encouraged his California donors to help him reach voters in more competitive states.
"I need you to find someone who voted for Barack Obama, maybe in a swing state, and give him a call, and tell him to go to the polls and support this effort," he said.

Israelis light candles in the shape of a clock during a protest against the government decision to return to winter clock more than a month ahead of Europe and the U.S. in Tel Aviv, Saturday, Sept 22, 2012. Israel was set to move its clocks back by an hour overnight on Sunday, putting the country on its winter clock more than a month ahead of Europe and the U.S. and adding to the rising anger that many mainstream Israelis feel toward an ultra-Orthodox minority. JERUSALEM (AP) ? The forecast for Israel on Sunday: balmy late-summer temperatures, uncomfortable humidity along the Mediterranean coast and ... darkness at 6 p.m.?
Israel moves its clocks back by an hour overnight, putting the country on its winter clock more than a month ahead of Europe and the U.S. and adding to the rising anger that many mainstream Israelis feel toward an ultra-Orthodox minority.
Many Israelis believe the time change, meant to make it easier to fast on the upcoming Yom Kippur holy day, unnecessarily disrupts life and costs the economy millions of dollars. They say the early onset of darkness raises electricity costs, causes more car accidents and gives children less time to play after school.
While the custom has long bred resentment, the premature arrival of winter hours comes at an especially sensitive time, given the rising backlash against what is widely seen as religious coercion by ultra-Orthodox leaders.
"It's ridiculous. It's just a power play by the ultra-Orthodox to show who's in charge. There is no reason for it being this early," said Raanan Lidji, a 34-year-old high-tech worker from Tel Aviv.
The move to winter time ahead of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and holiest date on the Jewish calendar, has been standard practice for decades and enshrined in law since 2005.
Yom Kippur, which begins on Tuesday evening, is marked by a sundown-to-sundown fast. Orthodox religious parties, which have always held key swing votes in Israel's political system, are behind the time change, wanting to decrease the number of waking hours for those fasting.
Although the length of the fast doesn't change, the sun sets an hour earlier with the winter clock, shortening the more difficult end of the fast. In a similar custom, neighboring Muslim countries sometimes adjust their clocks, even in the middle of summer, during Ramadan to make the monthlong fasting period easier to manage. But the clocks are returned to summer time after Ramadan ends.
In Israel, the seemingly premature clock change elicits complaints every year from secular and modern Orthodox Israelis, who make up some 90 percent of Israel's Jewish population. But this year, the anger has been heightened by a variety of factors.
Yom Kippur, which falls on a different date each year based on the Jewish calendar, arrives relatively early this year, making the change all the more noticeable.
It also comes against the backdrop of rising tensions between the secular masses and the politically powerful ultra-Orthodox minority. Much of the anger is being directed at Interior Minister Eli Yishai, whose ultra-Orthodox Shas Party has played a key role in shaping the law.
Yishai has resisted repeated calls to push back the change. In 2010, when it came even earlier in September, nearly 400,000 people signed a petition urging him to change the system.
Following the outcry, Yishai appointed a committee to study the matter. But its recommendation that the summer clock remain in effect until early October was never implemented.
"He simply wants to build up the special form of regime to be found in Israel ? a religious 'minocracy,' Not a democracy that represents the majority and takes the minority into account, but rather a minority that controls the majority and does not care a damn about it," wrote Nehemia Shtrasler, an economics affairs columnist at the Haaretz daily.
A spokesman from the Shas party did not immediately return messages seeking comment. A spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also had no immediate comment.
Ultra-Orthodox parties such as Shas, while representing less than 10 percent of the general population, have long served as kingmakers in Israel's fragmented political system.
With this power, rabbinical authorities control the rules for marriages, divorces and burials, and ultra-Orthodox males have long received exemptions from compulsory military service in order to pursue religious studies.
Ultra-Orthodox men often continue their studies well into adulthood, living off welfare subsidies as their secular counterparts work and pay taxes.
The draft exemptions and study subsidies have become a central issue in Israeli politics. Early this year, the Supreme Court ruled the exemptions illegal and ordered the government to change the law.
But attempts in parliament to reform the nation's draft law deadlocked, causing one of Netanyahu's coalition partners to quit, and the government missed a deadline to draw up new legislation. With religious leaders saying they will resist any change to the old arrangement, Defense Minister Ehud Barak is currently struggling to figure out a new draft system.
Adding to the tensions, extremist sects within the ultra-Orthodox community have come under fire in recent months for attempts to ban the mixing of sexes on buses, sidewalks and other public spaces. In Jerusalem, advertisements depicting women have been removed from billboards and buses because of fears that extremists will vandalize them.
These attempts at coercion have fueled a brewing cultural clash between two Israels. On one hand, the country continues to be a high-tech powerhouse with liberal values that have turned Tel Aviv into a gay mecca. On the other hand, the ultra-Orthodox, with their high birthrates, have grown increasingly outspoken and assertive.
With Netanyahu expected to call early parliamentary elections in the coming months, the country's opposition is likely to use the controversies over the draft and religious coercion against him.
"Israel is proving once again that it is living in the dark," said Ronit Tirosh, a lawmaker from the opposition Kadima Party.

If you've been paying attention, you know the quantum computing revolution is coming -- and so far the world has a mini quantum network, not to mention the $10,000 D-Wave One, to show for it. Researchers from the University of Melbourne and University College, London, have now developed the "first working quantum bit based on a single atom of silicon." By measuring and manipulating the magnetic orientation, or spin, of an electron bound to a phosphorus atom embedded in a silicon chip, the scientists were able to both read and write information, forming a qubit, the basic unit of data for quantum computing.
The team used a silicon transistor, which detects the electron's spin and captures its energy when the spin's direction is "up." Once the electron is in the transistor, scientists can change its spin state any way they choose, effectively "writing" information and giving them control of the quantum bit. The next step will be combing two quibits into a logic step, with the ultimate goal being a full-fledged quantum computer capable of crunching numbers, cracking encryption codes and modeling molecules that would put even supercomputers to shame. But, you know, baby steps.
