Mexico wastewater project uncovers Ice Age bones

Workers have discovered hundreds of bones belonging to Ice Age animals, including mammoths, mastodons and glyptodons, while digging to build a wastewater treatment plant north of Mexico City.

The bones could be between 10,000 and 12,000 years old and may include a human tooth from the late Pleistocene period, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History said Thursday.

Tusks, skulls, jawbones, horns, ribs, vertebrae and shells were discovered 20 meters (65 feet) deep in Atotonilco de Tula, a town in the state of Hidalgo, as workers built a drain, the institute said.

These remains belong to a range of species including mastodons, mammoths, camels, horses, deer and glyptodons, the armadillo's ancestor. Some bones may belong to bison, while others have not been identified.

Archeologists have worked for the past five months to recover the bones.

"It is the largest and most varied discovery of extinct megafauna found together in the Mexico basin," archeologist Alicia Bonfil Olivera said in a statement.

An anthropologist will have to confirm whether the tooth belonged to a human.

"It is not strange because we know that man already lived in the central Mexico region during that period," the archeologist added.

What to watch for at the GOP convention Thursday

Here are some things to watch for at the Republican National Convention Thursday:

1. MITT'S BIG NIGHT: Mitt Romney makes his case to the nation about why he should be elected president ? and why he thinks President Barack Obama should be sent packing. The speech could set the tone of Romney's campaign for the final two months.

2. ROMNEY'S FAITH: Mitt Romney's Mormon religion, a subject he hasn't frequently addressed on the campaign trail, will get some attention as several members of Romney's church are scheduled to share personal stories about the nominee at the convention. Romney is also expected to touch on his faith in his speech.

3. ISAAC'S AFTERMATH: Hurricane Isaac has been downgraded but the slow-moving storm is expected to bring days of unending rain to parts of the Gulf Coast region. Convention speakers have been making periodic pleas for prayers and donations to the Red Cross. Expect more as the cleanup begins.

4. RUBIO'S MOMENT: Sen. Marco Rubio is a rising star in the Republican Party, a Cuban-American who was once considered a front-runner to be Mitt Romney's pick for vice president. He gets an opportunity to make his mark in a prime-time speech.

5. REMEMBER NEWT? Newt Gingrich, who called Mitt Romney a liar during the primaries for attacks on his record, wasn't expected to speak at the convention. But he and wife, Callista, are to deliver remarks early in the evening.

A good CMS can also range from ?free? to the ?very expensive?. However, opting for the lowest-priced option is often not the best choice. If the selected CMS does not meet your needs, you could end up paying for additional costs later have a web designer or developer undo the damage done to your website.

In a previous post I talked about saving money on your monthly bills and why I think that doing so is one of the smartest and easiest ways to save money without really requiring a lot of on-going effort or input.

Well in this post I am going to take the topic further and show you a few more nifty ways to save money in other parts of your life, by being a bit savvy with your shopping and spending.

We have already talked about more extreme options like moving to a smaller house to save on rent, selling your car and getting a smaller, more efficient one as well as smaller steps like getting a fuel card, getting a better deal on your phone contract and perhaps you might sell your phone to offset the cost?

Well in this post we will talk about things like insurance, loans, credit cards and all sorts of other bits:

Insurance Costs

Insurance is one of those pesky things that you just have to pay and yet you will most probably never need to use the service you are paying for. So it makes sense to at least make sure you are not paying more than you need to.

Car Insurance:
The big one, and most expensive no doubt. Switching to a smaller car will also save you money here, so that?s a plus, but have you also considered: Removing any named drivers who don?t really use the car, lowering your mileage, experiment with different ?occupations?, there are probably plenty of options that could describe your job, see which one gives you the cheapest price.

Extra Tip:

Start by doing all of your monthly spending on your credit card so as to leave yourself as much cash as possible at the end of the month. Use this cash to pay off your loan or part of it. You have now effectively transferred a portion of your loan onto your credit card. Shop around for a balance transfer credit card and transfer that balance ? chances are you will pay a small transfer fee but then you will have that debt interest free for 12 months or more whilst you pay it off.

This is a tricky balancing act of course, but it should save you interest, first though it is sensible to pay off as much as you can by scraping together some cash. If you do sell your phone as previously suggested, pay that cash off your debt, you can also sell old unused electronics, furniture and other trinkets ? it all adds up.

Summary

Saving money takes a bit of work and sometimes some sacrifice, but as you can imagine, between these 6 areas of your life you might be able to save literally hundreds or even thousands each year and those sorts of savings make the effort worthwhile.

Aurora victims' families slam relief fund

Families of victims of the Aurora Colorado movie shooting held a press conference? expressing anger over how millions of dollars raised through donations and fundraisers have been dispersed.

The families of victims of the Colorado movie theater massacre said Tuesday at an emotionally charged news conference that although a fund intended to help them had raised more than $5 million, they had been shut out of the decision-making process.

Family members in Aurora, Colo., tearfully?decried what they called state officials' and the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance's lack of leadership and organization. They accused fundraisers of failing to give them a voice in determining what to do with the money already donated to the fund, despite using photographs of the victims in their fundraising efforts.

Group spokesman Tom Teves, whose aspiring psychiatrist son Alex Teves, 24, was killed in the attack, pleaded on behalf of the group for urgent financial help and for more of a role in the process.

?We come to speak as one voice,? Teves said. ?We are here because we want the public to know what has happened within days of the shooting.?

Other victims' relatives said that COVA's disorganization had left them all in the dark about the fund and deprived them of a much-needed sense of community.

"Every desire that we have has to come under a microscope," said the mother of one victim, responding to a question about the particular financial needs of victims' families. Deidra Brooks, whose 19-year-old son Jarell was recovering from his wounds from the July 20 shooting rampage, said that scrutiny had added insult to injury.

"It's more than a slap in the face. It's going through the 20th over and over and over," she said.

Teves said money had been solicited for The Aurora Victim Relief Fund using the names and pictures of those slain. "I am certain that the public intended 100 percent of those donations to go to the families of victims, and to use that money to help the healing process," Teves said. "Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case."

Teves said the families believed the funds would help all the victims, who Teves said included people in the theater or in the shooter?s apartment complex who suffered physically or emotionally.

The 12 who were killed included?18-year-old recent high school graduate AJ Boik, Air Force cyber-systems operator Jesse Childress, aspiring sportscaster Jessica Ghawi, community college student Micayla Medek and mother of two Rebecca Wingo.

Alexander Teves, Matt McQuinn, U.S. Navy veteran Jonathan Blunk and Navy sailor John Larimer all died shielding their friends or girlfriends.

The massacre's oldest victim was 51-year-old Gordon Cowden, whose teen children survived it, and its youngest was 6-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan, who had just learned to swim. Alex Sullivan, no relation to Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was celebrating his 27th birthday and his first wedding anniversary on the night he was killed.

The conference came as?lawyers in the murder case against accused gunman James Holmes wrangled?over what should be made public.

Holmes is accused of unleashing the July 20 shooting rampage at an Aurora movie theater. Police say the 24-year-old, wearing body armor and a gas mask and heavily armed, opened fire on an audience of the opening night of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 and injuring 58.

Police apprehended Holmes, who had recently withdrawn as a neuroscience Ph.D student from the University of Colorado, outside the theater and said they later removed explosives from his booby-trapped apartment.

Thanks to a court-imposed gag order, little has been publicly said about the case ? despite the intensity of prosecutors' legal battle with defense lawyers, who maintain Holmes is mentally ill, over access to his university and medical records.

Prosecutors want access to Holmes' school records as well as to the contents of a package he sent to his psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton. News reports citing anonymous sources indicated that package contained a notebook with writings that reportedly described a violent attack.

Defense lawyers argue the contents of the package are privileged, as Holmes' confidential communication with his doctor, and say Holmes is mentally ill.

In the weeks following the shooting, details of Holmes' past have slowly trickled out but have left victims' families few clues as to a motive.

The New York Times reported?Sunday that weeks before the massacre, Holmes had text messaged a classmate about a psychiatric condition common in patients with bipolar disorder and had warned her to stay away from him, saying, "I am bad news."

Prosecutors said in court filings that in May he had shown another classmate a semiautomatic pistol he had bought "for protection" and that in March he had told another that he wanted to kill people "when his life was over."

A hearing on the question of access to the contents of the package Holmes mailed to Dr. Fenton is scheduled for Thursday, and Fenton is expected to testify.

San Francisco archbishop-elect in DUI arrest

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The Roman Catholic archbishop-elect of San Francisco has been arrested for investigation of driving under the influence in San Diego.

A police spokesman says the Rev. Salvatore Cordileone was arrested early Saturday morning.

In July, Pope Benedict XVI selected the Cordileone to replace Archbishop George Niederauer, who is retiring in October.

Cordileone was most recently bishop of Oakland and several years ago was an auxiliary bishop in San Diego.

He is a vigorous supporter of California's same-sex marriage ban.

As Those With Autism Get Older, Fewer Proven Interventions ...

Researchers say current interventional therapies for autism among adolescents and young adults are not supported, or refuted, by existing outcome evidence.

Vanderbilt University scientists say the dearth of evidence calls for an immediate round of structured interventions that can be accurately tracked for success or failure.

Although the prevalence of autism is on the rise, much remains to be discovered when it comes to interventions for this population, the researchers concluded.

?Overall, there is very little evidence in all areas of care for adolescents and young adults with autism, and it is urgent that more rigorous studies be developed and conducted,? said Melissa McPheeters, Ph.D., M.P.H., and senior author of the report.

The report is a systematic review of therapies published by the Department of Health and Human Services? Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Zachary Warren, Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center?s Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders, said, ?There are growing numbers of adolescents and adults with autism in need of substantial support.

?Without a stronger evidence base, it is very hard to know which interventions will yield the most meaningful outcomes for individuals with autism and their families.?

As a basis for the report, researchers systematically screened more than 4,500 studies and reviewed the 32 studies published from January 1980 to December 2011 on therapies for people ages 13 to 30 with autism spectrum disorders.

They focused on the outcomes, including harms and adverse effects, of interventions, including medical, behavioral, educational and vocational.

• Some evidence revealed that treatments could improve social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary or reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up;
• Limited evidence supports the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism. The most consistent findings were identified for the effects of antipsychotic medications on reducing problem behaviors that tend to occur with autism, such as irritability and aggression. Harms associated with medications included sedation and weight gain;
• Only five articles tested vocational interventions, all of which suggested that certain vocational interventions may be effective for certain individuals, but each study had significant flaws that limited the researchers? confidence in their conclusions.

The researchers? findings on vocational interventions will be featured in the Aug. 27 issue of Pediatrics.

Newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder. Boys with autism outnumber girls 5-to-1, which which works out to one in 54 boys in the U.S. with? autism.

?With more and more youth with autism leaving high school and entering the adult world, there is urgent need for evidence-based interventions that can improve their quality of life and functioning,? said Julie Lounds Taylor, Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics and special education and lead author of the report.

Midlife fitness staves off chronic disease at end of life

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Being physically fit during your 30s, 40s, and 50s not only helps extend lifespan, but it also increases the chances of aging healthily, free from chronic illness, investigators at UT Southwestern Medical Center and The Cooper Institute have found.

For decades, research has shown that higher cardiorespiratory fitness levels lessen the risk of death, but it previously had been unknown just how much fitness might affect the burden of chronic disease in the most senior years -- a concept known as morbidity compression.

"We've determined that being fit is not just delaying the inevitable, but it is actually lowering the onset of chronic disease in the final years of life," said Dr. Jarett Berry, assistant professor of internal medicine and senior author of the study available online in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Researchers examined the patient data of 18,670 participants in the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, research that contains more than 250,000 medical records maintained over a 40-year span. These data were linked with the patients' Medicare claims filed later in life from ages 70 to 85. Analyses during the latest study showed that when patients increased fitness levels by 20 percent in their midlife years, they decreased their chances of developing chronic diseases -- congestive heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, and colon cancer -- decades later by 20 percent.

"What sets this study apart is that it focuses on the relationship between midlife fitness and quality of life in later years. Fitter individuals aged well with fewer chronic illnesses to impact their quality of life," said Dr. Benjamin Willis of The Cooper Institute, first author on the study.

This positive effect continued until the end of life, with more-fit individuals living their final five years of life with fewer chronic diseases. The effects were the same in both men and women.

These data suggest that aerobic activities such as walking, jogging, or running translates not only into more years of life but also into higher quality years, compressing the burden of chronic illness into a shorter amount of time at the end of life, Dr. Berry said.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), adults should get at least 2 ? hours of moderate to intense aerobic activity each week to ensure major heart and overall health benefits.

UT Southwestern has a partnership with The Cooper Institute, the preventive medicine research and educational nonprofit located at the Cooper Aerobics Center, to develop a joint scientific medical research program aimed at improving health and preventing a wide range of chronic diseases. One of the world's most extensive databases, the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study includes detailed information from clinic visits that has been collected since Dr. Kenneth Cooper founded the institute and clinic in 1970.

Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study include Dr. David Leonard, assistant professor of clinical sciences, and Ang Gao, a biostatistical consultant in internal medicine.

The study was funded with support from the NHLBI and the American Heart Association.

Who is Yvonne Grace?

I am trained in Theatre Design (got a BA Hons degree in it anyway!) and am an ex-actress, having worked for 5 years in Theatre In Education and Community Theatre Companys. I realised that it was the written word, not the spoken, that interested and excited me and so I went into script development and reading lots of scripts for lots of organisations including, Channel Four, Radio Four, The Young Vic, The Bush Theatre, and most new writing venues in London in the late 80?s early 90?s. I set up The Deptford Wives (since I was then living in Deptford ? the title suggested itself!) ? a script development company and ran successful script in hand performances out of the Birds Nest Theatre Pub in Deptford. I went into television via a script editing job on Eastenders and worked my way along the script editing route and into drama producing. I have produced children?s drama for CITV and Holby City for the BBC and also executive produced Crossroads for ITV as well as developing lots of long running series ideas for both markets with a wide variety of writers. I set up Script Advice in 2007 to help writers write better scripts, primarily for the tv market. I also design and run short courses for organisations such as C4, The National Film and TV school, and The Script Factory and am speaking at the London Screenwriters Festival in October and at their Breakfast Club in September. In 2006 I left the city, moved to the country, got married and had a little boy in space of a year. His name is Michael, he is 4 and a half and starts school in September. I plan then to re-start my own writing career!

Had you always been interested in scriptwriting?

I have always been interested in how writers write and why they do. I have always been fascinated by the written word and by stories. I believe storytelling is in my blood and the need to express stories to as many people as possible is a very real thing in me. I love to read and to immerse myself in a book or a film or a radio play. I enjoy all genres of storytelling and found shaping a writer?s ideas for a large audience (which is ultimately the work I have done on television) a very exciting and rewarding job to do.

What were the most difficult challenges you?ve had to overcome?

I believe the most difficult challenge for me when I was starting out was the fact that I did not know anyone in the television world or anyone who had even done the job or heard of the job that I had managed to land for myself on Eastenders. I wasn?t educated at Oxford or Cambridge and at the time I was trying to get into telly, most drama jobs seemed to have an Oxbridge graduate in them. So I had to be tenacious, confident, polite, thick-skinned and also really really know my stuff. I thankfully managed to achieve some, if not all, of the requirements necessary and after 2 years of knocking on doors I got the intro I needed by the insightful invitation to join Eastenders from Helen Greaves.

What has been your major highlight to date and tell us more about some of the projects you?ve been involved with?

A major highlight for me was winning the LWT Comedy Award for Best Children?s Comedy for the Children?s pilot I produced ?My Dad?s A Boring Nerd? written by Joe Turner. I also have huge affection for Crossroads, and particularly the last metamorphosis of the show, as I Executive Produced the show, changed it?s image and cast Jane Asher as the Uber Bitch Angel Sampson. I am very proud of the ratings we achieved (1.5 million a day across the week) and enjoyed working with such a talented team of creatives both in front and behind the camera. I am also very proud of the success I made of Holby City series 2. I turned the show around from being a critical, but not ratings success, to being both popular with the critics and popular with audiences. My series gained a top viewing figure of 9.6 million and I believe these figures ensured Holby?s continued success. Again, the success of this show is a team effort and it is working with writers and actors and production crews that both know their stuff and enjoy doing their stuff that really makes working in television enjoyable and rewarding.

What advice would you give to new unpublished scriptwriters?

Write yourself a very very good calling card script first and foremost. Then target the people you want to read your work. Be selective and be respectful at all times. Be tenacious and try at all times to show confidence in your work and in yourself (even if you dont always feel like that!) When someone gives you a chance, no matter how small it may seem at the time, or that it might not be just exactly what you want ? take it and do your best always with the opportunities you are given and those you create for yourself.

Tell us more about ?Script Advice??

Script Advice is a website that I run that offers script reading, script editing, script development and treatment reading services for any writer interested in developing their skill base and writing craft. I know about television, so that is my main area of expertise that I like to pass on to my clients, but I also read plays, novels and radio plays. I know what it is like to write in a vacuum and feel isolated from other writers ? so I also, via Script Advice, offer writers a place to go to ask questions, to find support and advice. I write 2 blogs and distribute a newsletter 4 times a year via my Facebook group Script Advice Writers Room and by my mail list. If writers contact me on my email address from my website I also try and help and will get back to you as soon as I can. I also run workshops and short courses on storylining, script editing and treatment writing. I basically love working with people and although I see myself as a leader, not a team player, I thrive on the buzz we all get from sharing our experiences and learning from each other ? my workshops celebrate the difference in all our writer voices and I try and pass on my experience in writing and shaping drama for the small screen to as many people as I can.

What would you like to say to anyone reading this right now?

I would like to say to anyone reading this; have faith in your own ability and stretch yourself and your writing, if possible, on a daily basis. Self belief and looking challenge in the face is something all writers need to be able to master and do. Writing is like psychotherapy in some ways, know yourself and you will make a better writer ? so always look to yourself to find the truth in what you write. Listen to those that have experience in the craft and the industry, take all advice with grace and as much as possible, be realistic about what you can achieve and about your own skill. Do not worry about your failings, try and improve and go forward each day.

100% The Invisible War

Kirby Dick is a documentary filmmaker known for picking fights with powerful institutions that operate in secrecy. In the Oscar-nominated Twist of Faith, he scrutinized the abuses of the Catholic Church covering up for sexual predators. In 2006's This Film is Not Yet Rated, he hunted down the then-unknown members of the MPAA ratings board and delivered an overwhelming critique of their ratings hypocrisies. With The Invisible War, Dick has taken on a subject that's even more powerful. The Invisible War, which won some awards at the Sundance film festival, examines the rampant numbers of sexual assaults and rape within the military. Through extensive, emotionally draining interviews and enraging statistics, Dick shows that most of the victims, when courageous enough to report their abuse, are met with skepticism, contempt, and injustice. One interview subject says that being raped isn't what makes her angry the most: "It's the commanders that were complicit in covering up everything that happened." This is a shocking, sobering, and eye-opening documentary that deserves to be seen by every American. You owe it to the brave men and women who serve this country, to see this movie. The ugly truth needs to come out and be finally dealt with. The upsetting statistics of sexual abuse within the military come from the Department of Defense, not an advocacy group, but our own government. Here are some of the most devastating stats: -20 percent of all women in the military have been sexually assaulted and/or raped while serving. -Women are twice as likely to be raped in the military rather than outside it. -Military sexual assault/rape victims have a higher rate of PTSD than soldiers who have fought in combat. This is a profoundly revolting, morally repugnant, and infuriating story presented with damning testimonials clear-eyed logic. When I left the theater, I was radiating unquenchable fury. You could have harnessed my rage as an alternative resource. A lot of people blithely say they support the troops but we as a nation are letting these brave men and women down. The system is letting these people down, protecting rapists, training them to be better rapists, and then setting them loose upon the civilian population to continue their heinous crimes (it's estimated the average sexual predator commits 300 acts in his or her lifetime). Listening to these heartbreaking stories can be grueling, but it is vital to listen. The women speak with such candor and bravery, befitting those ready to lay down their lives out of service for this country. But lest you believe this is merely a "women's issue," the film has a few interviews with male victims as well. With men outnumbering women six to one in the military, men are the majority of the victims of sexual abuse, a fact I doubt many would have known. As the experts attest, for an organization that rewards machismo, the shame for men can be compounded by the rampant homophobia within the American military culture. It's sadly understandable that so many of the interview subjects contemplated or attempted suicide. "Suicide or AWOL, those are your only two real options," a military investigator laments. According to TIME's investigative report, one Iraq and/or Afghanistan veteran commits suicide every day in America. Now remember that stat above concerning PTSD, and think about what the suicide rate must be like for victims of sexual abuse. One military man, husband to a rape victim, breaks down in sobs recounting his phone call for help while he tried to stop his wife from taking her own life. Watching proud, grown men break down into tears when they try and make sense of their institution harming their wives or daughters, it's heartbreaking all its own. These veterans would not advise any woman to consider a career in the military, not when this is the sorry state of justice. These victims were often handled with apathetic, callous, or downright hostile behavior, often being blamed for being attacked. These victims risked their careers to report their abuses, expecting some semblance of justice, and many times they were simply ignored or punished for "making waves." One interview subject talks about how her commanding officer related that he had heard about three rape accusations that week and incredulously asked if the women were all in cahoots. One woman was raped and then charged with adultery; she wasn't married but her rapist was, though he was never brought up on charges. Dick's documentary lays a clear argument that giving the commanding officers, people often without any legal training whatsoever, the power to prosecute cases leads to plenty of ignored abuses. In 2010, the military reported 3,158 reports of sexual abuse (remember that 80 percent of cases generally go unreported), but only one-sixth of those cases lead to a court martial and only 175 of the assailants served jail time. And when they do serve jail time, it's often knocked down to mere weeks. That way, the convicted serviceman doesn't get charged with a felony. This also means when they leave the military, the convicted sexual offender does not have to register with a national sex offender database. When investigations do arise, they are routinely stonewalled. What emerges from this inflammatory documentary is that the command's response wasn't to protect the victims but to protect the accused, time and again. These commanders are supposed to be objective and impartial arbitrators, but this is hardly the case. It's all about saving face, and a commander looks bad when he has a rapist in his unit, so rather than expel and punish the rapist, the military often drops the case and punishes the victim. Sometimes the commanding officer the victims are supposed to report the abuse to was in fact the perpetrator. In those instances, the victims have no possible path to justice. Major General Mary Kay Kellogg, Director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (DOSAPRO), said victims could appeal to the Defense Department's Attorney General, hence going over their commander's head. Except that of the almost 3,000 cases sent to the DOD AG, not a single case was ever prosecuted. Kellogg also absurdly suggests that victims petition their Congressman. Just imagine a civilian being raped and told, "Better ask your Congressman if you want justice." The response to the systemic abuses has been ineffectual. The military response was to raise awareness, not sift out rapists from the ranks and protect their own soldiers from sexual predators. The ad campaign to raise awareness is jaw-dropping, with slogans like, "Wait til she's sober," and a horrendously ear-splitting rap song about sexual assault prevention. It's so bad you can almost feel the seething resentment of the military. There's also an informative video with a dramatization of a woman, fleeing helplessly after a man tries to touch her (the fact that this dramatization makes the woman look silly is intentional, me thinks). This woman runs into another serviceman who admonishes her, "Where's your buddy?" The implication is that women should know that they can be raped at any time unless accompanied by a buddy. Does this not imply that every man in the military is capable of rape at the drop of a hat? And what if that buddy ends up being your rapist? The military builds a greater sense of camaraderie, and the men and women in uniform feel like a family. As one interview subject notes, when one soldier rapes another, it is akin to a crime of incest, a betrayal of that family. One victim was told she brought on the sexual harassment because of what she was wearing... which just happened to be her military uniform. Dick's film is obviously advocating a very specific side, but who cares about the idea of presenting balance given the subject? The Department of Defense spokespersons and their rote, officious responses are edited for some major points of baffled, incredulous laughter, as we contrast their company line with the testimonials of the men and women they failed to protect. Again, I return to the notion that not every story has two sides. What exactly is the other side in this epidemic of abuses? What possibly could the merits of the other side be, the status quo? This is not just some anti-military screed. In fact, many of the participants speak so highly of the ideals of the military, the duty to serve, and their genuine feelings of belonging to these hallowed institutions. This makes their disillusionment all the more distressing. Almost every interview subject has a military background, some discharged and some retired, and the movie presents its claims with clear, level evidence. The testimonials are so damming, the abuses so clearly documented, the obfuscation from justice so repeatedly maintained, that I cannot even fathom a second side to this story. When it comes to sexual assault, there is only one side to this issue. Dick also doesn't overplay the obvious emotional appeals in the film. There is plenty, but he doesn't sensationalize the drama or amplify the emotions in a self-serving manner. Instead, the film looks to clearly examine a systematic problem. Rather than deal only with potent outrage, Dick's film is also a call to action with some strong ideas on how to better protect the victims of sexual abuses. Set up an independent system of justice outside of the commanders' control, and work on preventing rapists from joining the military rather than cutting down the possibilities of how women can be raped. How about we punish the guilty party? Last year, a group of veterans who had been sexually abused, initiated a class-action lawsuit against the military. This suit was dismissed by the court because, in their words, rape was an "occupational hazard of military service." Reread that sentence again. Let it sink in. Now ask yourself is that at all acceptable given the values we profess for our country? The culture within the military is simply that rape and sexual abuses are just not that big of a deal (a Congresswoman admits that the Defense AG told her they have "other, higher priorities" to worry about), and so it all continues. The implication is that for the military to function, you're going to have to excuse some excess, that excess being an estimated 30,000 sexual assaults a year. I'd like the military brass to explain to me what number would be unacceptable. How prevalent do these abuses need to be before proper action is taken, and not some facile PR, face-saving empty gesture, but something real? To me, one rape is one too many. Dick's excoriating advocacy documentary is powerful, furious, but sensitive to the victims and their horrifying ordeals. It declares that we can and should do better. In April, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta watched The Invisible War and two days later made some changes. He took the decision to prosecute away from the commanders. It's a start, but there's a long way to go to fixing the military's patronizing view of women. The movie opens with a series of advertisements targeted at women through the years, and the treatment is astoundingly patronizing and the film's only spot of bleak humor. At one point, one of the victims asks if she and her fellow victims hypothetically deserve purple hearts for being wounded in battle too. "We're never going to get anything," another replies. These victims deserve recognition and justice, which has long been denied them. You won't see a more challenging, infuriating, and compelling documentary of this year. It's hard to watch at many points, and I cried at five separate occasions, but this is a movie that needs to be watched.
