KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Endurance swimmer Penny Palfrey crossed the halfway mark Saturday as she pushed through the Florida Straits, enduring jellyfish stings but otherwise encountering perfect conditions in her attempt to become the first woman to swim unassisted more than 100 miles from Cuba to Florida.

A GPS tracking device on Palfrey's support boat a few meters away from the swimmer shows she reached the halfway point near midday, according to her website.

Palfrey was swimming steady and strong and reported no physical complaints. She had finished 69 miles (111 kilometers) around 3 p.m. Saturday, breaking her personal best when she swam 67 miles (108 kilometers) between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman islands last year, according to crew member Andrea Woodburn.

Palfrey reapplied sunscreen and grease to prevent chafing and said the water conditions had been excellent other than the extreme heat. She even spotted a few hammerhead sharks and dolphin pods. Crew members said she was barking orders at team members accompanying her on kayaks and a catamaran as she kept up a torrid pace in a battle that tested the limits of human endurance.

Earlier, at 8:38 a.m. EDT (1248 GMT), a little over 25 hours into the swim, the 49-year-old grandmother was 48 miles (77 kilometers) from her starting point at a marina in the Cuban capital, Scott Woodburn, who is part of Palfrey's landing team in the Florida Keys, told The Associated Press.

She is "alert and swimming physically strong," Woodburn said, adding that the bathwater-warm waters remained calm. "It couldn't be better for her."

The 20-year veteran of distance swimming is no stranger to jellyfish stings, which forced her to abort two past swims in Hawaii.

The British-born Australian swimmer set off from Havana early Friday. A member of Palfrey's crew was tweeting to fans, while a webpage updated her location every 10 minutes or so based on data from a GPS device worn by the swimmer. The site briefly went down overnight when it had to be reset, but was working again early Saturday morning.

As she endures a second day, Palfrey will have to fight through physical and mental fatigue while fending off dehydration, hypothermia and dangerous marine life. At her current rate, it would take her a bit more than 56 hours to complete the swim, slightly above her initial estimates. She would get to Florida Sunday afternoon.

If Palfrey succeeds, she'll go in the record books as the first woman to swim the Straits without the aid of a shark cage. Instead she's relying on equipment that surrounds her with an electrical field to deter the predators. Her support team consisted of more than a dozen navigators, handlers and medical personnel who were escorting her on the 44-foot (13-meter) catamaran Sealuver.

Australian Susie Maroney made the crossing in 1997 at age 22, but with a shark cage. American Diana Nyad made two unsuccessful cageless attempts last year on either side of her 62nd birthday, but had to call them off due to a debilitating asthma attack and painful Portuguese man o' war stings. She plans to try again this summer.

Palfrey began the swim in a regular sporting swimsuit, but said Friday that she planned to put on a porous, non-buoyant Lycra bodysuit that provides cover down to the wrists and ankles whenever jellyfish may be a threat.

Baltimore Washington Eye Center Announces Fireworks Eye Safety Awareness Month

BALTIMORE, MD, June 30, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Contrary to what you might think, there is no safe way for nonprofessionals to use fireworks and the risk of catastrophic eye injury is real and not trivial," commented Baltimore Ophthalmologist Arturo Betancourt, M.D., Medical Director of Baltimore Washington Eye Center.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks are involved in approximately 10,000 injuries per year that are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. Of those, 2/3 occurred during the one month period surrounding the July 4th holiday. It is important to note that
- Eyes were the second most commonly injured part of the body!
- Males were injured 3x more than females.
- Approximately 25% of injuries are to children under 15.

Fireworks and celebrations go together, especially during the Fourth of July. But there are precautions parents can take to prevent these injuries. The best defense against kids suffering severe eye injuries and burns is to not let kids play with any fireworks. Do not purchase, use or store fireworks of any type. Protect yourself, your family and your friends by avoiding fireworks. Attend only authorized public fireworks displays conducted by licensed operators, but be aware that even professional displays can be dangerous.

Some general guidelines to be aware of in the event an eye accident and injury does occur, include:
- Do not rub the eye.
- Do not attempt to rinse out the eye. This can be even more damaging than rubbing.
- Do not apply pressure to the eye itself- but protecting the eye from further contact with any item, including the child's hand.
- Do not stop for medicine! Over-the-counter pain relievers will not do much to relieve pain. Aspirin (should never be given to children) and ibuprofen can thin the blood, increasing bleeding. Take the child to the emergency room at once.
- Do not apply ointments or drops. They may not be sterile and may make the area around the eye slippery and harder for the doctor to examine.

Czech "Science Is Beautiful" photo and illustration competition explores the wondrous worlds discovered via scientific investigation

Life is filled with unexpected moments of beauty, something those on a lab bench know just as well as any poet. The third annual Science Is Beautiful competition at Charles University in Prague allowed students and faculty to share these moments through photographs, digital imagery and illustration.

"What is beautiful about science?" asked Bohuslav Ga?, dean of the university's Faculty of Science, which organized the competition, during his introductory speech at the exhibition of winning entries. "Two things: the enchantment in the discovery of the unknown and the delight in the elegance of ideas and shapes. The last one we can fully perceive in the present exhibition."

The contest, which debuted in 2009, aims to share science's esthetic with the general public, raising awareness of the marvels scientists encounter daily. The winning entries cross disciplines, setting mathematical models and crustacean anatomy side by side. Each image blurs the distinction between art and science, from a da Vinci?esque painting of a fetus in utero, to a photograph of magnified mineral surface with a palette that would have pleased Kandinsky.

The competition received 281 entries, and jurists included a number of prominent Czech scientists and artists, including a singer?songwriter-cum-dragonfly-photographer as well as the founder of the Digital Imaging Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. In addition, the general public could comment on and rate entries online to elect a people's choice winner, which was announced alongside the jury's selections.

Winners could place in one of four categories: scientific microphotography, scientific photography, scientific illustration or virtual nature. In addition, the jury chose a grand prize?winner who received 12,000 Czech crowns.

The Good

The machine itself is a solid piece of machinery. It?s sturdy and doesn?t jump up and down in excitement every time it goes to print. As well as being well-made, the printer contains a touch screen that allows you to access basic functions copy, scan, fax and photo as well as access media through SD card.

Ink is standard CMYK, allowing you to replace color by color instead of throwing all three in a wasteful tri-color cartridge. The printer?s touchscreen allows you to keep up with ink levels by displaying a color coded graphic letting you know when you?re due for another cartridge.

The Bad

Despite having a ?photo? printing function, this is still an all-in-one. As such, you?re not going to want to do a lot of photo printing as the quality is just so-so when it comes to producing color true photographic prints. The colors come out darker with the blacks popping while the remainder of the photo looks dull and unimpressive. This isn?t a photo printer, which, to Brother?s defense, it?s not really meant to be. Like many color inkjet printers, Brother?s MFC-J825DW uses pigment ink for the black cartridge and dye-based ink for CMYK. As such, the blacks are vibrant and pop more, which, depending on the photo your printing, can make the bolder colors look sad and dull.

The paper tray system this printer uses isn?t my favorite. The cartridge only holds so much paper and pops in and out instead of allowing you to slide your paper in via an easy to manipulate feeding system. Great if you need to keep your paper pristine while waiting to print. A pain if you have to do a lot of printing all at once.

Verdict

If you?re looking for a printer for your home office or a device that will do basic printing function from your iPad, the Brother is more than sufficient for your needs. Its ease of use and ability to print on a wide range of mediums makes it a good choice for most practical uses. However, if you?re looking for a printer that will excel in photographic prints, you need to step up and get a printer more suited to such a task.

'So You Think You Can Dance' Reveals Top 20 Contestants

Nine seasons in and "So You Think You Can Dance" celebrates its 200th episode by unveiling its top 20 dancers and dropping a game changer. Zooey Deschanel of "New Girl" was on deck as guest judge for the event, as 35 talented performers were narrowed to 20. Finalists completed a grueling week of Vegas auditions to take the stage for the first time and begin the real fight to become America's favorite dancers.

That's right, you read correctly: dancers. In a surprise announcement, judge Nigel Lythgoe revealed that America will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite female and their favorite male dancer, separately, culminating in two winners at the end of the dance competition series.

The fun-filled episode was much more upbeat and exciting than reveals past, primarily because of its new one-day-a-week time slot, but also because this year's cream of the crop are one of the most diverse groups ever in contention. They include an animation dancer, a robot dancer and the show's first belly dancer, among others.

Season nine is also introducing new dance styles, including the most technically difficult, ballet — two of the top 20 are professional ballet dancers.

"All of the top 20 this year are superstars," Lythgoe said as dancers performed in groups, representing their respective dance styles.

Judge Mary Murphy particularly applauded the ballroom dancers, her personal forte, saying, "I think the train just pulled up in the sizzle station!" But she let out her signature scream for the ballet group that wowed with a graceful and powerful routine.

Nothing compared to the finale dance, choreographed by former judge, "SYTYCD" favorite and overall dance guru Mia Michaels, showcasing the top 20 in full form. Choreographed to Kaskade's "Eyes," the routine had multiple levels and enticed the audience to get to know the dancers better.
