SACRAMENTO, CA - In the NBA Draft Lottery for the sixth straight year, the Sacramento Kings found themselves at least staying put and not falling into a lower draft?position as they have over?the last three?years.
Finishing the 2011-12 NBA season with the fifth worst record in the league, Sacramento will indeed hold the fifth pick in June's Draft.
"I'm not disappointed,?I like?five," Kings Co-owner Gavin Maloof exulted,?as he?joined his 21-year-old center DeMarcus Cousins and about 200 fans at Firestone Public House in Sacramento. "There's 25 other teams that wish they were five. I love five, I'm happy. I really am.?This is the first year we didn't move back."
The Kings?had only a 7.6 percent chance of winning the top draft pick and 25.3 percent shot at moving up into the top three.
Maloof also was quick to remind everyone that Cousins was also selected fifth overall in 2010 and he's?regarded as arguably the team's most talented player,?as well as?one of the league's budding future stars.
The New Orleans Hornets were awarded the Draft's top pick - which is likely to be coveted?Kentucky big-man Anthony Davis. New Orleans had the league's fourth worst record and defied the odds - they had a 13.7 percent chance to win the top selection.
The Charlotte Bobcats, who had the best chance of landing the draft's top pick with the league's worst record, will pick second and the Washington Wizards will select third.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, who selected Duke's Kyrie Irving last season at number one, will select fourth next month after falling one spot. Irving went on to become NBA's Rookie of the Year last season.
Sacramento held the league's worst overall record coming into the Lottery where they slipped to fourth - which was the worst scenario possible - when they drafted Tyreke Evans.
Last season, they tumbled two slots from five to seventh, where?they traded their pick in Bimack Biyombo in a three-team deal which landed them Jimmer Fredette from BYU.
In addition to the fifth pick, Sacramento also holds the 36th selection overall in the draft's second round.
The NBA Draft will take place June 28th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
