Here’s What America's Shiny New F1 Track Looks Like

The construction team down at the Circuit of the Americas is putting the finishing touches on the brand-spanking-new racetrack near Austin, Texas. Workers began applying fresh coats of bright red paint to the edges of the 3.4-mile course this week, giving the circuit a pretty stunning look. The track?s run-off areas will feature red white and blue stripes "to commemorate the American heritage of the circuit."

Designed by famous F1 course designer Hermann Tilke, whose courses tend to draw equal parts praise and criticism, the track incorporates features from some famous international venues. Turns 5, 6, and 7 are reminiscent of the high-speed S curves of the Maggots and Becketts corners at England?s Silverstone, while a flat-out multi-apex corner was inspired by Istanbul Park?s Turn 8.

With the revived United States Grand Prix just more than a month away, it?s astonishing that the track was just a dirt path a little more than four months ago. When F1 cars head out for the first practice laps scheduled for November 16, it will be the first time Formula 1 has run in the States since the 2007 U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

And as the second to last race in the 2012 season, Austin Grand Prix should stage some interesting racing. Currently only four points separate first place Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso from second place and defending champion driver Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.
