Fusco announces March as 'Red Cross' month in Rome

ROME?Mayor Joseph Fusco was joined by Rev. Dr. Tom Hast on Thursday for a flag raising ceremony in honor of the Red Cross.

During the event Fusco declared that March 2013 will be known as Red Cross Month in Rome to raise awareness in the area about the organization.

?We are asking the community to reach out and support the American Red Cross in any way that they can,? Fusco said.

?Whether it?s through volunteering time, blood donations or financial assistance?there is so many things people can do that they might not even realize.?

For the last eight years Hast has volunteered for the Disaster Action Team for the Red Cross and has consistently donated blood for the last 38 years. Hast has also helped victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita.

?In difficult times I think it?s great that people come out and volunteer,? he said. ?A lot of people have time to give and talents?and the Red Cross is a great way to put those talents to work or other volunteer efforts.?

According the Red Cross they responded to nearly 70,000 disasters in this country by providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities. In the Mohawk Valley since July the Red Cross has responded to 48 local emergencies providing more than $35,000 worth of assistance.

Jennifer Balog, community chapter executive of the Mohawk Valley added that for those interested in donating a community blood drive will be held at the J. F. Kennedy Area in June.
