1080p HTC Droid DNA smartphone lands at Verizon

5 hrs.

A new high-end smartphone from HTC aims to do battle with the Galaxy S III, Nexus 4, and other, even larger phones. It's called the Droid DNA, and its secret weapon is a 1080p?display that outclasses anything on the market.

The trend in smartphones over the last year has been big (HTC's 4.3-inch and 4.7-inch?One series), bigger (Samsung's Galaxy S III,?4.8-inches), and beyond big (the enormous Galaxy Note,?5.3 inches, and Galaxy Note II,?5.5?inches) ? and people are really?snapping up these huge phones. The Galaxy S III is currently the best-selling phone in the world, beating out even the iPhone 5. So it's no surprise that HTC is taking the same tack, but with a bigger and better screen.

The 5-inch display on the DNA?has a resolution of 1920x1080 (or 1080p), giving it an incredible 440 pixels per inch ? far better than any of the other big phones out there and better than the iPhone or new iPad's screen. Naturally it's covered in Gorilla Glass as well, so you don't have to worry about that big screen getting scratched or cracked.

Inside, there's a quad-core 1.5-gigahertz processor, 2GB of RAM, and the latest version of Android (4.2, aka Jelly Bean),?wrapped in HTC's Sense interface. It has front and rear cameras, and the one on the back is a healthy 8 megapixels with a fast F/2.0 lens and modern backside-illuminated sensor.

The Droid DNA comes with 16GB built in, but curiously does not allow for external storage like a MicroSD card. You can always use cloud storage for all the photos you'll be taking with the phone. You can upload them via the quick 4G LTE connection.

Interestingly, the device?appears to be a modification of another HTC phone, the One J Butterfly, so it's possible that another version could appear on a different carrier. For the present, however, it's only available on Verizon for $200 with a new contract. You can pick yours up on Nov. 20.
